Hindu woman trapped and pressured to convert by Muslim man posing as Hindu; Hindu deities denigrated
Case Summary
In the Pakbara area of Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, a Hindu girl was deceived by a Muslim man, Arman, who concealed his religious identity by introducing himself as "Aman" to befriend her. The Hindu girl, a BCA student from West Champaran district of Bihar, filed a complaint stating that Arman sexually exploited her on the false promise of marriage, sexually assaulted and blackmailed her using explicit photographs and videos, pressured her to convert to Islam, change her name, wear a burqa, forcibly fed her non-vegetarian biryani, repeatedly compelled her to consume abortion pills, and used disrespectful language towards Hindu deities. The Hindu student first met Arman while purchasing medicines from his medical store. He introduced himself as "Aman" and obtained her mobile number on the pretext of helping her find rented accommodation. She stated that he later established a relationship with her on the promise of marriage. When she subsequently returned to the medical store, she came to know that his real name was Arman and that he owned the shop. The student stated that when she confronted him about concealing his identity, he assaulted her, threatened to kill her, and stated that he possessed her explicit photographs and videos. She stated that he used those photographs and videos to blackmail her by threatening to make them viral and sexually assaulted her at multiple locations. The student further stated that Arman repeatedly compelled her to consume abortion pills, resulting in a deterioration of her health. According to the complaint, on 25 July 2026, he assaulted her again and threatened to leak the explicit photographs and videos and kill her if she opposed him. The Hindu student submitted her complaint to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP). On 29 July 2026, a written complaint was received at Pakbara Police Station, following which a case was registered against Arman. According to SP City Kumar Ran Vijay Singh, the SSP directed immediate action and two police teams were constituted to investigate all aspects of the case. Police also took two to three of Arman's associates into custody, stated that efforts were underway to arrest him, and said that strict legal action would be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The primary category for this case is: Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. The first subcategory for this case is: Forced conversion before marriage. The first tertiary category is: Forced to follow non-Hindu religious practices. The second tertiary category is: Forced to wear Hijab. In such cases, a non-Hindu man is in a relationship with a Hindu woman when the pressure to convert her religion begins to manifest. In such cases, typically, two patterns emerge. First, when the relationship is consensual and the religious identity of the perpetrator is known to the Hindu woman in the relationship, however, at some point during the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts to force the victim to convert her religion and give up her Hindu religious identity. The second is when the woman gets into a marriage with the man pretending to share her faith. Later, when the truth is revealed, the man starts pressuring the woman to convert her religion and give up her religious identity. In both situations, the methods used to force the victim to convert her religion often revolve around force-feeding beef, forcing her to wear hijab, forcing her to read the Kalma or even pressurising the victim to do ‘Nikah’, which is marriage under Islamic law, with a prerequisite being conversion to Islam. Cases where a Hindu woman consensually converts to Islam in a relationship will be left out of the hate crime database, even though it could be argued in several cases that the conversion was a result of religious brainwashing. The next subcategory for this case is: Desecration of Hindu religious symbols in a relationship. When Hindu women are in a relationship with non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman faces insult and desecration of her faith (Hinduism) and its symbols because of the inherent disregard for polytheism of the non-Hindu partner. Such relationships may be consensual, with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim. Somewhere along the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts desecrating the religious symbols of the Hindu partner out of spite for her faith. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. The next subcategory for this case is: Blackmailed to convert. When Hindu women are in a relationship with non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman is blackmailed to convert her religion, owing to her religious identity of being a Hindu. Such relationships may be consensual, with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim; however, there could be cases where the relationship is not consensual, and the non-Hindu man starts blackmailing a Hindu woman to convert her religion. In these cases, it is often seen that the Hindu woman is blackmailed with intimate photos and/or videos, threats of harm to her or her family, threats of violence, etc. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. The next subcategory for this case is: Man pretends to be Hindu. The tertiary category is: Name Changed. When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by mala fide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. The next primary category relevant here is: Hate speech, and within this, the subcategory selected is: Anti-Hindu slurs, mocking faith. Anti-Hindu slurs and the deliberate mocking of the Hindu faith owing to religious animosity involve the usage of derogatory terms, stereotypes, or offensive references to religious practices, symbols, or figures. One of the common anti-Hindu slurs used against Hindus is “cow-worshipper” and “cow piss drinker”. The intention of using this term is to demean and mock Hindus as a group and their religious beliefs since Hindus consider the cow holy. Additionally, some symbols and the slurs attached to them have a historical context that exacerbates the insult, hate, stereotyping, dehumanisation and oppression against Hindus. Cow worship has been used for centuries to denigrate Hindus, insult their faith and oppress Hindus specifically as a religious group. There has been overwhelming documentation about how cow slaughter has been used to persecute Hindus with cow meat being thrown in temples and places of worship. There has also been overwhelming documentation where cow meat (beef) has been force-fed to Hindus to either forcefully convert them to Islam or denigrate their faith. Apart from cow worship, the Swastika – which holds deep religious significance for the Hindus – has also been misinterpreted and distorted to use as a slur against Hindus. Similarly, the worship of the Shivling has been used by supremacist ideologies and religions to denigrate Hindus owing to religious animosity. Such slurs and denigration stem out of inherent animosity and hate towards Hindus and their faith, therefore, it is categorised as hate speech targeted at Hindus specifically owing to their religious identity. This case exhibits multiple religious markers that clearly establish it as a religiously motivated crime specifically targeting a Hindu victim. Firstly, the accused, a Muslim man, deliberately concealed his religious identity to deceive the Hindu woman. This became the foundation which culminated in pressure on the Hindu victim to abandon her faith and adopt a different religious identity. By presenting himself as a Hindu before revealing his true identity and then demanding religious conversion, the deception served a religious objective rather than merely facilitating a personal relationship. This act of hiding one's religious identity itself demonstrates a clear bias and malicious intent towards the victim’s religion. By hiding his true identity, the accused manipulated her trust and targeted her under false pretences, indicating a premeditated effort to exploit the woman based on her religious background. The subsequent compelling of the victim to wear a burqa and eat non-veg food formed part of the broader attempt to impose religious practices that were not her own. Religious attire is an outward expression of religious identity and belief. Forcing a Hindu woman to adopt clothing associated with another faith represents an attempt to erase her visible Hindu identity and compel conformity with religious practices she did not choose. Similarly, forcing a Hindu to consume non-veg is a profound disrespect to their religious beliefs. For many practising Hindus, abstaining from non-vegetarian food is not merely a dietary preference but a deeply held religious belief; therefore, forcing someone to eat non-vegetarian food is an intentional violation of their religious principles and an assault on their cultural and spiritual identity. In the broader context of hate crimes, forcing someone to engage in behaviour that is expressly forbidden or offensive in their religion is a clear manifestation of religious intolerance. It demonstrates a blatant disregard for the victim's rights to practice their faith freely. Here, the actions of the perpetrator clearly point towards the deep disdain he harboured for Hindus and their religious beliefs. It is evident that the perpetrator targeted the victim because of her religious identity and that his motivation was driven by religious hate. Further, the use of intimate photographs, videos, threats of violence, and threats to make the material public created sustained pressure to secure religious conversion. The blackmail was not confined to maintaining control over the victim but was also used as a means of compelling her to abandon her Hindu faith. Such coercion transformed the abuse into one directed specifically at her religious identity. The use of disrespectful language towards Hindu deities demonstrates contempt for the victim's faith and the religious beliefs she professed. Hindu deities are central to Hindu worship and devotion. Insulting them in the course of coercing a Hindu woman reflects hostility towards the religion itself and seeks to undermine her attachment to her faith by humiliating what she holds sacred. The conduct throughout the relationship reveals a pattern of domination extending beyond physical and sexual abuse. Religious deception, psychological coercion, threats, intimidation, and pressure to abandon one's faith were employed together to strip the victim of her autonomy and compel compliance. The religious dimension was therefore not incidental but remained intertwined with the abuse from the time the deception was discovered. The sequence of events indicates that the objective was not simply to sustain a relationship but to exercise complete control over the victim by targeting multiple aspects of her identity. Her religion, name, appearance, beliefs, and personal choices were all subjected to coercive pressure. This reflects an attempt to replace her existing religious identity with one dictated by the perpetrator rather than respecting her freedom of conscience. Taken together, the incident demonstrates a pattern in which religious deception, coercive conversion, compelled adoption of non-Hindu religious practices, blackmail, and contempt towards Hindu beliefs were directed at a Hindu woman because of her religious identity. The combination of these acts targeted not only the victim as an individual but also her continued adherence to the Hindu faith, warranting its documentation as a religiously motivated hate crime.
