Case Summary

A Hindu woman from Ghaziabad was blackmailed with obscene videos and photographs, stalked, threatened, and pressured to convert to Islam by a Muslim man, Asif, and his associates. The victim, who worked as a teacher at a private school in Ghaziabad, stated that Asif, a resident of Zaidi Colony in Meerut, befriended her in 2024 and lured her into a relationship. She stated that he subsequently raped her, recorded obscene videos and photographs, and used them to blackmail her into converting to Islam. Following a complaint filed by her father, a case was registered against Asif at the Medical Police Station in Meerut in 2024 under charges including rape. The case remained pending before the court. The woman stated that after Asif was released from jail, he, along with his wife Fiza, brother Arif, and Fiza’s brothers-in-law Asif and Irfan, pressured her to change her statement in the pending case. Fearing for the safety of her husband and family, she gave a statement in Asif's favour before the court on 21 January 2026. Despite this, the harassment continued. From 10 February 2026 onwards, she received calls from different phone numbers and messages sent through fake social media accounts created using Hindu names and images of Hindu deities. Through these calls and messages, she was repeatedly pressured to meet Asif, engage in physical relations, and convert to Islam. The victim further stated that Asif continued sending messages seeking a compromise and later attempted to re-establish contact under the pretext of friendship. When she informed him that she was married and asked him to stop harassing her, he threatened to make her obscene videos and photographs viral and ruin her life if she refused to convert to Islam. She further stated that Asif's wife, brother, and other relatives also pressured her to convert to Islam, sent her obscene messages, and threatened to kill both her and her husband. In a further escalation, Asif entered her school by posing as the parent of a child, followed her while she travelled to and from the school and attempted to force her into a car. Following the victim's complaint, the Madhuban Bapudham Police Station in Ghaziabad registered a case against Asif, Fiza, Arif, another accused named Asif, and Irfan under provisions relating to stalking, criminal intimidation, abusive behaviour, the Information Technology Act, and the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act. The victim submitted call recordings, messages, and other digital evidence to the police. Her statement was recorded, efforts were initiated to trace and arrest the main accused, coordination was established with Meerut Police, and the role of the remaining accused, along with the digital evidence, was taken up for investigation.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case is being added to the tracker under the primary category- Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. Within it, the sub-category selected is - Blackmailed to convert. When Hindu women are in a relationship with non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman is blackmailed to convert her religion, owing to her religious identity of being a Hindu. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim, however, there could be cases where the relationship is not consensual and the non-Hindu man starts blackmailing a Hindu woman to convert her religion. In these cases, it is often seen that the Hindu woman is blackmailed with intimate photos and/or videos, threats of harm to her or her family, threats of violence etc. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. The other sub-category selected here is - Man pretends to be Hindu. When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. The other primary category selected here is - Attack not resulting in death. Within it, the sub-category selected here is - Attacked for opposing radicals or trying to save victim. ]In several cases, Hindus are attacked for opposing religiously motivated crimes being committed against a fellow Hindu or simply for voicing an opinion opposing radical elements, who either have in the past or continue to persecute Hindus. In such cases, the initial attack against the victim, against which the Hindu was trying to defend the victim, would also need to be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime. Since the initial crime itself was religiously motivated and the subsequent crime of attempting to save the victim or speaking against the radical elements ends up inviting a violent attack, it would also be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime under this category. This case constituted a clear instance of a religiously motivated hate crime because the harassment directed at the Hindu woman was inseparably linked to repeated attempts to make her abandon her faith and convert to Islam. The intimidation she faced was not confined to threats or blackmail alone. The repeated demands for conversion demonstrated that her Hindu identity had become the focus of the abuse, with the accused using fear and coercion to pressure her into giving up her professed religion. The accused did not rely on persuasion or voluntary choice but weaponised intimate videos and photographs to break the victim's resistance. By exploiting her vulnerability and threatening to expose her private life unless she complied with his demands, he sought to deprive her of the freedom to practise her faith without fear. Such acts went beyond personal blackmail and became a means of coercing a Hindu woman to surrender her religious identity through intimidation and psychological pressure. Pressuring a Hindu individual to discard her religious faith and embrace another was a direct attack on her religious identity and dignity. It was not a matter of personal choice; it was coercion rooted in hostility towards the victim's Hindu identity. Such an attempt reflects religious animosity because the act was not simply about personal differences but about erasing the victim’s Hindu faith, making it a religiously motivated crime. A further aspect of this case was the accused’s deliberate use of Hindu identities to re-establish contact with the victim after his release from jail. The accused created and used social media accounts bearing Hindu names and images of Hindu deities to approach the victim and resume communication. This tactic indicated a deliberate attempt to exploit the victim’s religious trust by disguising his identity and presenting himself through Hindu symbols and identifiers. Rather than contacting her openly, the use of fabricated Hindu profiles to regain access to the victim demonstrated a calculated form of manipulation in which her religious identity and familiarity with Hindu symbols were exploited to overcome her resistance and facilitate further harassment and pressure to convert. The continued harassment, including stalking, repeated threats and intimidation, reflected a sustained effort to punish and pressure the victim after she had resisted the accused’s actions and pursued legal proceedings that resulted in his imprisonment. The accused continued targeting her after his release, using different identities and methods to re-establish contact, threaten her and wear down her resistance. The persistence of this conduct indicated that the victim was being targeted not only because of her Hindu identity but also because she had refused to comply with the accused’s demands and had taken legal action against him. The victim was targeted because she had resisted the accused’s conduct, refused to comply with his demands and taken legal action against him, after which the accused continued to retaliate against her. At the same time, the use of religiously deceptive profiles, threats, blackmail and pressure to convert demonstrated that her Hindu identity remained central to the coercion. Such conduct violated her personal dignity and freedom of conscience and religion, while the sustained attempt to compel a Hindu woman to abandon her faith through intimidation and psychological pressure amounted to predatory proselytisation. Therefore, the case was documented as a religiously motivated hate crime in the Hinduphobia Tracker. Disclaimer: Media reported this incident on 27th July 2026.
