Hindu temple vandalised, idol desecrated and assets looted by Muslim mob amidst rising attacks on Hindu minorities in Bangladesh

Case Summary
A Hindu Sarbojanin Sri Sri Shiva-Durga Temple was vandalised, the idol of Lord Shiva was damaged, and timber worth approximately 20 lakh Bangladeshi taka was looted by a Muslim mob in Mahadevpur Upazila of Naogaon district in Bangladesh. On the morning of 28 March 2025, a group of approximately 150 to 200 people, led by Fazlur Rahman Bullet, including eight named accused, arrived at the site with 30 to 35 trolleys and looted a large quantity of the stored timber. During the incident, the attackers vandalised the entrance gate and tin shed of the Sarbojanin Sri Sri Shiva-Durga Temple. The complaint further stated that when the tin shed collapsed during the attack, the head of the idol of Lord Shiva was damaged, causing anger and concern among members of the local Hindu community. Following the incident, members of the Hindu community demanded the immediate arrest of all those responsible and exemplary punishment for the perpetrators. The attack sparked outrage in the locality over the reported vandalism of the temple and damage to the sacred idol. Following the incident, police registered a case and arrested Fazlur Rahman Bullet as the main accused. He was produced before a court on 29 March, which remanded him to judicial custody. Officer-in-Charge Md. Shahin Reza of Mahadevpur Police Station confirmed that Bijendranath Mondal, president of the temple committee, filed the case naming eight individuals while also listing 150 to 200 unidentified persons as accused. The investigation remains underway.

The acts were directed at a Hindu place of worship and its sacred contents rather than constituting ordinary property damage. A temple is not merely a physical structure but a sacred space dedicated to the worship of deities and the preservation of Hindu religious traditions. It serves as the spiritual and cultural centre of the local Hindu community, where devotees gather for daily prayers, festivals, and other religious observances. Consequently, an attack on a temple affects not only the physical structure but also the community's ability to practise its faith freely and safely, undermining their sense of religious security. The damage to the Shiva idol further reinforces this assessment. In Hinduism, a consecrated murti is not regarded as a mere object or decoration but as the sacred embodiment of the deity, through which devotees offer prayers and perform religious rituals. Damaging such an idol therefore carries significance beyond its physical destruction, as it desecrates an object that is central to Hindu worship and religious identity. The combined targeting of the temple, the destruction of the Shiva idol, and the disruption of a place of worship had consequences extending beyond material loss. Such acts interfere with the community's ability to worship in a sacred space, diminish their sense of religious security, and communicate hostility towards a place and symbols that hold profound spiritual significance for Hindus. Taken together, these facts support treating the incident as a hate crime directed against the Hindu community and its religious institutions.
