Hindu youth assaulted for helping Muslim girl by Muslim group in Hubballi, Karnataka
Case Summary
In Hubballi, Karnataka, a Hindu youth, Pramod Bijawad, was assaulted by a group of Muslim men after he helped a Muslim college student with her hostel application. The youth stated that he had become acquainted with the student when she visited a hockey ground in his locality for sports practice. According to him, the student, who was pursuing her studies at Ambedkar College, requested his assistance in securing hostel accommodation as she did not know anyone locally and faced difficulties travelling from her village. The youth stated that he forwarded the student's hostel application to a person named Shafi during the previous academic year, but no hostel was allotted before the admission process concluded. After the student entered her second year, she again approached him for assistance, and he forwarded her application to Shafi once more. When no response was received, he contacted BJP workers in his locality and later approached Bashir, a BJP worker, believing he could help with the hostel application. According to the youth, he remained in contact with Bashir for two to three days regarding the hostel application, but no accommodation was secured. He stated that his assistance to the Muslim student subsequently became the reason for the assault by a group of Muslim men. The injured youth has been admitted to KIMS Hospital. Deputy Commissioner of Police Shruti visited the hospital and inquired about the victim. The incident occurred in the jurisdiction of the Town police station.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The primary category for this case is: Men attacked for being associated with non-Hindu woman. The subcategory for this case is: Attacked/killed for being associated or suspicion of being associated with Muslim woman. There have been several cases documented of Hindu men/boys being attacked specifically by Muslim groups/mobs for merely being associated or suspicion of being associated or being seen with a Muslim woman in public. In most of such cases, the Hindu man is not in a relationship with the Muslim woman, however, the mob proceeds to threaten and/or assault the Hindu man for merely being associated with the Muslim woman in any capacity. The rise of such crimes stems from a particularly sinister campaign run by several Muslim ideologues and activists. The campaign claims that Hindu men are attempting to ‘lure’ Muslim women into relationships to ensure that Muslim women leave their faith and follow Hinduism. The propaganda has been spearheaded with the help of WhatsApp groups and the extensive use of social media, sans evidence of the same. In many cases, pamphlets were fabricated to lend credence to this campaign. The root of this campaign lies in the fact that several cases of sectarian crimes against Hindu women in relationships with Muslim men have been documented. In such cases, Hindu women have often been forced/pressured to convert to Islam, assaulted, threatened and even murdered owing specifically to their religious identity and their refusal to give up that religious identity to adopt Islam. To delegitimize the suffering of Hindu women when such sectarian crimes are committed against them, the theory of ‘Bhagwa Love Trap’ was floated by sections of the Muslim community. As this theory gained traction, Muslim mobs started targeting Hindu men who were seen with Muslim women. In several such cases, the Hindu man was assaulted merely for offering to drop a Muslim woman in his vehicle or being friends. The differentiating factor between such cases and legitimate cases of Hindu women being targeted while in a relationship with Muslim men is that there is no sectarian violence, and force/pressure to convert. The nature of sectarian violence against Hindu women is not about two adults in a consensual relationship, working together, studying together, or even marrying each other where religious considerations are declared. In this category of crimes, it is pertinent to remember that in none of the cases, there is an element of the Hindu man masking his identity or forced religious conversion. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. This case has been classified under the subcategory "Attacked for being associated or suspected of being associated with a Muslim woman" because the Hindu victim was assaulted after helping a Muslim college student with her hostel application. He assisted the student by forwarding her hostel application and contacting individuals in an effort to secure hostel accommodation after she sought his help. His interaction with the student arose solely from providing assistance. The assault followed the victim's association with the Muslim woman and was directed at him because of that association. There was no element of identity concealment, religious conversion, or a romantic relationship. The incident arose from the victim's interaction with the Muslim student, making his association with her the basis of the attack. The targeting of the Hindu victim for assisting a Muslim woman falls within the subcategory of attacks on Hindu men for being associated with Muslim women, as the violence was linked to that association rather than any other reported factor. Such incidents often happen because some individuals or groups believe that Muslim women should not interact or associate with Hindu men. They see such interactions as unacceptable and use threats or violence to stop them. Their actions are intended to discourage similar interactions in the future and to enforce their own social and religious boundaries. This describes the reported conduct of the perpetrators in this case and should not be taken as a description of Muslims as a whole. Such acts are carried out by Muslim perpetrators due to indoctrination by Islamic theology, which advocates that all non-Muslims (referred to as kafirs) are inferior and subject to subjugation unless they convert to Islam or live under Islamic rule (dhimmitude). These ideas are not mere abstractions; they manifest in actions where non-Muslims, especially Hindus in India, are seen as targets for religious domination, coercion, or humiliation. This theological framework fosters an "us versus them" mindset, in which any assertion of Hindu identity or religious freedom is seen not only as undesirable but as a threat to Islamic supremacy. As a result, perpetrators who are shaped by such teachings feel justified, even morally obligated, to harass, suppress, or violently attack Hindus, particularly when Hindus assert their religious rights or resist conversion. Such acts, therefore, are not isolated but driven by a broader ideological hostility towards Hindus as non-believers and reflect an attempt to impose religious dominance. Since this case also has all key religious markers of a premeditated attack motivated by bias and hatred against the Hindu community, which is a defining feature of hate crimes, this has been added to the tracker.
