Case Summary

In the Ranga village of Sahibganj district, Jharkhand, a minor Hindu girl was deceived by a Muslim youth, Manawar Ansari, who introduced himself as a Hindu man named "Manohar," concealing his religious identity to develop a relationship with her. According to the complaint filed by the victim's mother, the two had studied together, during which they became acquainted. On 15 July 2026, the girl left her home saying that she was going to school in Barhet. Later, her family received information that she had been taken away by the accused. They subsequently learnt that Manawar had taken the minor to the Shivgadi Temple after presenting himself as a Hindu and had attempted to marry her by applying vermilion to her forehead. The victim's mother further stated that the accused had earlier taken her to Ranchi on 29 June 2026, repeatedly harassed her, and had sexually exploited her. Furthermore, a burqa was found on the scooter used by the accused, raising concerns that it had been intended to conceal the girl's identity while transporting her. The incident came to light when people present at the Shivgadi Temple noticed the marriage ritual and informed members of the temple management committee. After reviewing the temple's CCTV footage, the committee alerted the Barhet police. Acting on the information and the complaint lodged by the girl's mother, the police registered an FIR, arrested Manawar Ansari, and sent him to judicial custody. The minor's statement was subsequently recorded before the court. According to the police, the accused was remanded to jail following interrogation.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

The primary category selected in this case is: Crimes against women in relationship or other sexual crimes. The subcategory selected is: Man pretends to be Hindu, with the tertiary category being - Name changed and Marries as per Hindu rituals. When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. This case has been included in the tracker because the accused concealed his Muslim identity and introduced himself to the minor Hindu victim as "Manohar", a Hindu name, in order to establish a relationship with her. The accused deliberately concealed his religious identity to initiate and sustain a relationship with a Hindu woman. This itself is a clear manifestation of bias and malicious intent towards the victim's religion. By concealing his true identity, he exploited her trust, targeting her under false pretences. This indicates a premeditated intent to manipulate her based on her religious background. In cases like these, the tactic of adopting a false Hindu identity to manipulate and "ensnare" a Hindu individual is not just an act of personal betrayal but can also be interpreted as an expression of disdain or disregard for Hinduism and its customs that reflects a deeper animosity towards Hindus and their beliefs. The use of a false Hindu identity was not merely incidental but formed the foundation upon which the relationship was built, making the religious concealment central to the commission of the offence. The religious motivation became even more pronounced when the marriage was solemnised according to Hindu customs and rituals while the perpetrator continued to conceal his true identity. Hindu marriage ceremonies are among the most sacred rites within Hinduism, invoking divine blessings and establishing a lifelong spiritual bond through rituals that hold profound religious significance for Hindu families. Participation in these ceremonies while falsely presenting oneself as a Hindu amounted to the misuse of sacred religious traditions to reinforce a fabricated identity. Rather than respecting the sanctity of Hindu religious practices, the perpetrator used them as instruments to legitimise a deception directed at a Hindu girl. The marriage therefore represented not merely a personal fraud but the exploitation of Hindu religious institutions and rituals to facilitate access to a victim who believed she was marrying within her own faith. Additionally, it is important to note here that the victim was a minor, which means the element of consent and genuine change of conscience was missing ab initio. Minors, due to their young age and lack of maturity, are particularly vulnerable to manipulation and coercion. They may not have the ability to fully understand the implications of consenting to relationship or elopement, and the Muslim perpetrator purposely targeted and exploited this vulnerability of the victim. Furthermore, any supposed consent given is also considered invalid under the POCSO Act. Since this case exemplifies the use of coercion and manipulation to achieve religious conversion, it is a blatant act of religious hate, which is why it has been documented here in the hate tracker. This incident is not an isolated case but part of a broader pattern where Hindu women are deliberately targeted through deception and emotional blackmail for religious conversion and sexual exploitation. This stems from inherent hostility towards the victim's professed faith since Abrahamic faiths believe that any non-adherent to the faith is subject to being dehumanised till they convert. Such predatory actions stem from doctrinal animosity towards the Hindu faith and its adherents. This case has therefore been categorised as a hate crime because the facts demonstrated that the accused relied upon religious deception by assuming a Hindu identity to establish a relationship with a minor Hindu girl and subsequently used Hindu religious symbols and rituals in furtherance of his actions. The concealment of his religious identity, the choice of a Hindu place of worship for the marriage ceremony, and the exploitation of the victim collectively impart a distinct religious dimension to the incident, warranting its inclusion in the tracker. Disclaimer: It is important to clarify that none of the media sources covering this case has specified the exact date when the victim's ordeal began. The earliest date mentioned is 15 July 2026, when the victim went missing. Since Hinduphobia Tracker records the incident based on when the victim’s ordeal began and not when it was reported, we have considered the date of the incident as 15 July 2026, though the media reported the incident on 17 July 2026.
