Case Summary

The sanctity of a Hindu temple was defiled in Chhitipur village under the Dinara Police Station area of Shivpuri district, Madhya Pradesh. A miscreant identified as Satish Jatav threw human faeces and urine inside the temple premises, including the Mata Mandir and the shrine of Lord Shiva. The incident triggered widespread outrage among the local Hindu community. According to media reports, on the morning of 8 July 2026, temple priest Omprakash, who had been sleeping in a room within the temple complex, noticed Satish Jatav, a resident of the same village, running towards the temple at around 4:30 am. When he entered the temple premises, he found human faeces and urine scattered across the Mata Mandir and other parts of the temple complex, including the Lord Shiva shrine. As news of the desecration spread, a large number of villagers gathered at the temple. Enraged by the desecration of the Hindu place of worship, the villagers lodged a complaint with the police and demanded strict action against the accused. Acting on the complaint, the police arrested Satish Jatav for questioning. While the police were taking him to the police station, his family members attempted to stop the police vehicle. However, the police took him into custody and proceeded with the investigation. Dinara Police Station in charge Ravindra Singh Kushwaha stated that a police team reached the temple immediately after receiving information about the incident and began investigating the case. During the course of the investigation, the accused's family claimed that he was mentally ill. The police examined the available medical documents to verify this assertion and stated that further legal action would be taken based on the findings of the investigation and the evidence collected. The incident created an atmosphere of tension and resentment in the village. The police continued to investigate all aspects of the case and appealed to the public to maintain peace while assuring that appropriate legal action would be taken following the completion of the investigation.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

The primary category selected is: Attack on Hindu religious representations. The subcategory selected is: Desecration of Hindu religious symbol. Icons and symbols or a religious representation of a spiritual ideal are widely revered in Hinduism. Iconography is of vital significance in the Hindu milieu. It helps connect people’s spiritual beliefs with the real world. Iconography within the Hindu faith takes several shapes and forms. Murtis are of most significance to Hindus, to which daily rituals, prayers and offerings are done. Besides the murtis, there are several other symbols which have deep significance in the Hindu faith – the Om and Swastika for example. Since these Hindu religious symbols hold paramount importance in Hinduism, any desecration of symbols, icons, murtis, religious representations and manifestations, is driven by animosity towards the faith itself which manifests itself through these murtis, icons and symbols. Therefore, any desecration of these Hindu religious symbols and representations is considered religiously motivated hate crimes under this category. The other subcategory selected is: Attack on Temples. In Hinduism, a temple is the abode of the Deity. The Deity in the Temple is consecrated, thereby, making it a real, breathing entity. Hindus believe that not just the Deity but the temple premises itself are sacred to Hindus since Hindus hold the faith that the entire Temple space is an amalgamation of the divine energy of the deity. Given the central significance of Temples in Hindu Dharma, any attack against a Hindu Temple or its peripheral premises is an attack on the faith itself and is born out of animosity towards the faith, of which, the Temple is a central tenet. Any manner of attack against a Temple and/or its premises would therefore be considered a religiously motivated hate crime. The other subcategory selected is: Defiling religious customs. Sanatan Dharma is not a religion of one book, which is to say that while it has religious scriptures that form the central tenets of the faith, there are several traditions followed through thousands of years, mostly passed from generation to generation orally. There are several such customs and traditions that are followed by various Hindus and Hindu sects. Defiling of these traditions and customs is a breach of an individual or group’s religious practices. Such practices can range from dietary restrictions like not eating non-vegetarian food for a certain period of the year, not eating non-vegetarian food at all, not eating beef since the cow is considered holy in Hinduism, the sanctity of religious customs followed in the house (like many ISCKON devotees), etc. Any malicious action leading to the breach of such traditions or defilement of these traditions owing to animosity towards the faith or for the sake of activism stems not only from the lack of faith in the religion itself but also from disregard for the faith of the devotees who follow the customs/traditions and implicit bias against the faith, the tradition itself. Since these specific traditions are central to the faith of the devotees of that specific sect of Hindus, any non-compliance with these traditional rules would be considered a religiously motivated hate crime. This case constitutes a clear example of a religiously motivated hate crime because the perpetrator deliberately desecrated the sanctity of a Hindu temple by throwing human faeces and urine inside its premises. To fully understand the religious nature of this crime, it is necessary to understand the significance of temples in the Hindu faith. A Hindu temple is regarded as the earthly abode of the deity, where devotees come to offer prayers, perform rituals, and seek spiritual communion. The sanctum housing the deity, whether dedicated to the Divine Mother in a Mata Mandir or to Lord Shiva, is considered especially sacred and is treated with the utmost reverence. The sanctity of a temple is preserved through strict religious practices that emphasise ritual purity, cleanliness, and regular worship. Every aspect of temple worship, from daily ablutions of the deity to the cleansing of the premises before rituals, reflects the central importance of maintaining a spiritually pure environment. For millions of Hindus, temples are not merely places of congregation but sacred spaces whose holiness must be protected and preserved. Against this backdrop, the deliberate act of dumping human faeces and urine inside the temple premises showcases unmistakable religious animosity. In Hindu religious tradition, both human faeces and urine are regarded as ritually impure and are wholly incompatible with a sacred space dedicated to worship. Deliberately introducing such substances into a temple, particularly within the Mata Mandir and the shrine of Lord Shiva, constitutes a direct act of desecration. The defilement was not confined to a peripheral area of the temple but specifically targeted these two shrines, which are among the most sacred spaces within the temple complex. The manner in which the act was carried out demonstrates that it was not an accidental contamination or an act devoid of religious implications. Rather, the deliberate choice of substances considered ritually polluting, coupled with their placement inside the holiest parts of the temple, points to a conscious effort to violate the sanctity of the place of worship and deeply wound the religious sentiments of Hindu devotees. Such an act goes far beyond ordinary vandalism or public nuisance. By intentionally contaminating the temple and its most sacred shrines, the perpetrator targeted not merely a physical structure but an institution of profound religious significance. In doing so, the act sought to insult, degrade and desecrate a revered Hindu place of worship, making it a clear instance of a religiously motivated hate crime. The accused's family also tried to defend his actions and whitewash the crime by claiming that he was mentally ill. In several cases where anti-Hindu miscreants vandalise or desecrate Hindu places of worship, a recurring trope used to shield the perpetrator is to attribute the crime to the accused's supposed mental illness, claiming that the act was committed because the individual was "mentally ill" or "mentally unstable". A similar narrative emerged in the present case. During the investigation, the accused's family claimed that he was mentally ill, following which the police stated that they were examining the available medical records to verify the claim. While the investigation was ongoing at the time of reporting, the assertion of mental illness does not, by itself, explain the nature of the act. The accused did not merely create a public nuisance; he entered a Hindu temple and deliberately threw human faeces and urine inside its premises, specifically targeting both the Mata Mandir and the shrine of Lord Shiva. These are among the most sacred spaces within the temple complex, making the act one of deliberate desecration. The use of the "mental illness" trope to justify crimes targeting Hindu temples or idols by an anti-Hindu perpetrator raises critical questions. If the perpetrator was indeed mentally unstable, why did he specifically target a Hindu place of worship, leaving other religious sites untouched? This selective focus suggests that such acts are not driven by mental health issues but by religious animosity. The repeated use of this narrative to downplay crimes against Hindus reflects a strategic effort to whitewash religious hatred, obscuring the true motivations and intentions behind the attacks. Since this incident fulfils the parameters of a religiously motivated hate crime, it is being included in the Hinduphobia Tracker's hate crime database.
