Minor Hindu girl lured into romantic relationship, abducted and raped by Muslim man
Case Summary
A 17-year-old Hindu girl from Ajmer, Rajasthan, was lured into a romantic relationship and abducted by a Muslim man named Salim, also known as Syed Sailab. According to reports, the accused lured the minor Hindu girl into a relationship while residing in Ajmer. Subsequently, the victim travelled to Vadodara, Gujarat, and began staying with her aunt. After learning that the minor had gone to Vadodara, Salim followed her there. Once in the city, he contacted the girl, persuaded her to meet him outside, abducted her, and fled. He subsequently took her across several states, including West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, while keeping her away from her family. During the period of her abduction, Salim sold the victim's gold jewellery and mobile phone. He also demanded ₹1 lakh from the victim's family in exchange for her release and threatened to kill her mother. Following complaints lodged by the victim's family, the police launched a search operation. Officers from Vadodara's Akota police station traced the girl to Rajasthan and rescued her. Before the police could apprehend him, Salim noticed the officers approaching, got out of the rickshaw he was travelling in, and escaped. After her rescue, the minor's statement was recorded, following which the police initiated proceedings to register a rape case against Salim. The victim's mother also lodged a complaint with the Ajmer police regarding the abduction, the ransom demand, the sale of the victim's belongings, and the threats issued against her.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been placed in the Undecided Database because, although the circumstances of the incident raise concerns that warrant closer scrutiny, the evidence currently available does not conclusively establish that the offences were motivated by religious hostility or that the victim was targeted specifically because of her Hindu identity. The victim in this case was a 17-year-old Hindu minor girl from Ajmer, Rajasthan, who was lured into a romantic relationship by Salim alias Syed Sailab, a Muslim man from the same city. After learning that she had travelled to Vadodara to stay with her aunt, the accused followed her there, persuaded her to meet him, abducted her, and subsequently took her across multiple states. During the period of her captivity, he sexually assaulted her, sold her gold jewellery and mobile phone, demanded ₹1 lakh from her family for her release, and threatened to kill her mother. These facts indicate that the accused had cultivated a relationship with the victim before abducting her and subjected her to prolonged exploitation thereafter. Such circumstances warrant careful examination to determine whether the victim's religious identity had any bearing on her selection or the commission of the offence. The Hinduphobia Tracker has documented instances in which Hindu women and minor girls have been deliberately targeted by Muslim men through deceptive relationships, followed by abduction, sexual exploitation, coercion, or other forms of abuse. In some such cases, subsequent investigations have revealed evidence of religious targeting, coercive conversion attempts, or expressions of anti-Hindu hostility. Consequently, where a Hindu victim is groomed and exploited by a Muslim accused, it becomes necessary to examine whether the crime forms part of a broader pattern of religiously motivated victimisation or whether it arose from personal or criminal motives unrelated to religion. However, in the present case, the evidence presently available does not establish that the victim was targeted because she was Hindu or that the accused acted out of hostility towards Hinduism. There is no indication that the accused attempted to convert the victim to Islam, compelled her to abandon her faith, insulted Hindu religious beliefs, made anti-Hindu statements, or otherwise demonstrated a religious motive during the commission of the offence. Rather, the available facts indicate that the accused groomed the victim, abducted her, sexually exploited her, deprived her of her valuables, and extorted money from her family. These offences, grave as they are, point towards criminal exploitation and financial gain but do not, on the presently available evidence, conclusively demonstrate a religiously motivated hate crime. Accordingly, this case has been placed in the Undecided Database. Should further evidence emerge during the course of the investigation or judicial proceedings establishing that the victim was selected because of her Hindu identity, or that religious hostility, coercive conversion Disclaimer: The Hinduphobia Tracker records incidents based on when an event occurred or when the victim's ordeal began.
