Case Summary

In Ghansali, Tehri Garhwal district, Uttarakhand, a 15-year-old Hindu girl was befriended on Snapchat by a man who concealed his Muslim identity by posing as a Hindu. The accused, later identified as Mohammad Jassim Ansari, a resident of the Majra area in Chandigarh, used the fabricated Hindu identity to establish a relationship with the victim and subsequently sexually exploit her. According to the complaint, the accused first contacted the victim on Snapchat around ten months before the incident through a fake profile created under a Hindu identity. Over time, the two developed a friendship and remained in contact, while the accused continued to conceal his real identity. In January 2026, Mohammad Jassim Ansari travelled to Ghansali and stayed at the victim's residence for approximately 10 to 15 days, presenting himself as a Hindu friend. Subsequently, the victim travelled to Chandigarh and stayed at the accused's residence for 10 to 12 days. During this period, the accused lured her with promises of marriage and persuaded her to visit Chandigarh again in June 2026, where she stayed at his residence for another 20 to 22 days. According to the complaint, the accused sexually exploited the victim while continuing to conceal his religious identity. The victim later discovered that the accused was a Muslim who had been posing as a Hindu throughout their relationship. Following this revelation, the two confronted each other on 4 July 2026, when the accused visited Ghansali again. Thereafter, the victim approached the local police station and lodged a complaint detailing the identity fraud and sexual exploitation. The matter escalated around midnight between 8 and 9 July 2026, when a group of 25 to 30 local residents and members of Hindu organisations found Mohammad Jassim Ansari hiding inside the victim's bedroom. An angry crowd gathered at the spot and assaulted the accused before personnel from Ghansali Police Station reached the scene, rescued him from the mob, and took him into custody. Following the arrest, local Hindu organisations and the Vyapar Mandal observed a complete market shutdown in Ghansali on 9 July 2026 to protest the incident and demanded strict legal action against the accused. Police initiated an investigation into the allegations, and further legal proceedings were underway at the time of writing this report.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

In this case, the primary category selected is: Crime against Women in a relationship and other sexual crimes. The subcategory in this case is "Man pretends to be Hindu." When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by mala fide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore making it a religiously motivated hate crime. The religious motive in this case is evident from the fact that the Muslim perpetrator concealed his real identity and posed as a Hindu to gain the trust of the minor Hindu victim. Had religion been irrelevant to the offence, there would have been no reason for him to misrepresent his faith. The deception succeeded because he understood that presenting himself as a Hindu would make the victim more comfortable and more likely to trust him. This establishes that the victim's Hindu identity was not incidental but one of the factors that enabled the crime. The perpetrator did not merely fabricate personal details. He deliberately adopted a false Hindu identity as a means to access, manipulate, and exploit the victim. By weaponising a Hindu identity for personal gain, he demonstrated a conscious understanding that the victim's religious identity and the trust associated with it had to be circumvented through deception. Such conduct reflects a disregard for the victim's faith and her right to make informed choices based on truthful information. It reduces Hindu identity to a convenient disguise that can be assumed to overcome religious boundaries and exploit the trust that exists within the community. The aggravating circumstances are further strengthened by the fact that the victim was a minor. Children are particularly vulnerable to manipulation because they lack the emotional maturity and life experience required to recognise deception and make fully informed decisions. By targeting a minor Hindu girl through religious identity fraud, the perpetrator exploited both her age and her faith, making her especially susceptible to coercion and manipulation. In cases like these, the tactic of adopting a false Hindu identity to manipulate and "ensnare" a Hindu individual is not just an act of personal betrayal but can also be interpreted as an expression of disdain or disregard for Hinduism and its customs that reflects a deeper animosity towards Hindus and their beliefs, and this is why this case has been added here.
