Case Summary

In the Sakra area of Muzaffarpur, Bihar, a 21-year-old Hindu woman was deceived into a relationship and financially exploited by a Muslim man named Mohammad Arman, who posed as a Hindu man and an Indian Army soldier. Furthermore, when the victim confronted him about the deception, she was assaulted and abused with casteist slurs. According to the victim, she came into contact with the accused, Arman, after accepting his Facebook friend request in January 2026. During this time, he introduced himself as a Hindu man and an army personnel, and their conversations gradually developed into a relationship. Before meeting her, he got a military-style haircut and arrived dressed in a commando uniform. During WhatsApp video calls, he displayed military attire and weapons to reinforce his false identity. He repeatedly told the victim that he was posted on the Pakistan border or had been captured by terrorists and needed urgent financial assistance. Trusting his representations, she transferred money to him in multiple instalments. The deception came to light when the victim discovered that Arman was already married and worked as a puncture repairer at a bicycle shop, contrary to his claims of serving in the Indian Army. She subsequently visited his residence with her mother and uncle to confront him. During the confrontation, Arman and five of his family members assaulted the victim, abused her with casteist slurs, and threatened to kill and bury her at gunpoint. She contacted the police by dialling 112 and later lodged a formal complaint at Sadar Police Station. An FIR was registered against six individuals, including Mohammad Arman. The victim submitted photographs of Arman in military uniform with weapons, screenshots of WhatsApp video calls, and records of online financial transactions as evidence. Police launched an investigation and conducted raids to arrest the accused.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category - Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. Within this, the subcategory selected is - Man pretends to be Hindu. When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by mala fides intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc) or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. The other primary category selected here is - Attack not resulting in death. Within it, the sub-category selected is - Attacked for opposing radicals or trying to save victim. Anti-Hindu slurs and the deliberate mocking of the Hindu faith owing to religious animosity involve the usage of derogatory terms, stereotypes, or offensive references to religious practices, symbols, or figures. One of the common anti-Hindu slurs used against Hindus is “cow-worshipper” and “cow piss drinker”. The intention of using this term is to demean and mock Hindus as a group and their religious beliefs since Hindus consider the cow holy. Additionally, some symbols and the slurs attached to them have a historical context that exacerbates the insult, hate, stereotyping, dehumanisation and oppression against Hindus. Cow worship has been used for centuries to denigrate Hindus, insult their faith and oppress Hindus specifically as a religious group. There has been overwhelming documentation about how cow slaughter has been used to persecute Hindus with cow meat being thrown in temples and places of worship. There has also been overwhelming documentation where cow meat (beef) has been force-fed to Hindus to either forcefully convert them to Islam or denigrate their faith. Apart from cow worship, the Swastika – which holds deep religious significance for the Hindus – has also been misinterpreted and distorted to use as a slur against Hindus. Similarly, the worship of the Shivling has been used by supremacist ideologies and religions to denigrate Hindus owing to religious animosity. Such slurs and denigration stem out of inherent animosity and hate towards Hindus and their faith, therefore, it is categorised as hate speech targeted at Hindus specifically owing to their religious identity. The third primary category selected here is - Hate speech against Hindus. Within it, the sub-category selected here is - Hate speech against Hindus. This case was included in the Hinduphobia Tracker because a Hindu woman was deceived into a relationship by a Muslim man who concealed his religious identity by posing as a Hindu. The religious trigger became evident from the deliberate assumption of a Hindu identity to gain the victim's trust and exploiting her further. Firstly, the perpetrator's act of deception by posing as a Hindu and an army soldier demonstrates a clear bias and malicious intent towards the victim's religion. By hiding his true identity, the Muslim man manipulated the Hindu woman's trust and specifically targeted her under false pretences, indicating a premeditated effort to exploit her because of her religious background. This deception deprived the victim of her right to make an informed decision about entering into an intimate relationship, as she was deliberately denied truthful information about the perpetrator's identity. The accused was aware that the victim, being Hindu, would likely have refused his advances had she known his real identity, and he circumvented this by concealing his religion and falsely presenting himself as a Hindu. In such instances, identity concealment is not merely a deceptive tactic for personal gain but a calculated strategy rooted in religious profiling and the targeting of Hindu women. The accused's own statement that an Islamic cleric had instructed him during his madrasa education to target and exploit Hindu girls further strengthens the indication that the victim was not chosen at random but because she was Hindu. Such conduct reflects a broader pattern in which Hindu women are singled out by Muslim men using false identities for coercion, forced religious conversion, and exploitation, exposing a deeper hostility towards Hindus and their beliefs. Secondly, the accused's deception was rooted in the concealment of his real identity and the adoption of a false persona to win the confidence of a Hindu woman. Under this fabricated identity, he financially exploited the victim by inducing her to transfer money through false promises of marriage and fabricated stories about being an Indian Army soldier in distress. Since the financial exploitation was enabled by the same identity-based deception that initiated the relationship, it formed part of the broader pattern of religiously rooted targeting and exploitation of a Hindu woman. Thirdly, when the victim visited the accused's residence to confront him, he and five of his family members assaulted the victim, abused her with casteist slurs, and threatened to kill and bury her at gunpoint. Here, it can be argued that a caste-specific slur is aimed at her micro identity of belonging to the Dalit section of the Hindu community and not her Hindu identity itself. However, as far as Abrahamic religions are concerned, the micro identities of caste, region, and language are secondary. It is the religious identity that drives the animosity of the perpetrator against the Hindu victim. In this case, while Arman hurled caste abuses at the victim, the animosity was driven by his animosity towards Hinduism and Hindus. While the immediate trigger of the violence was the confronting the deception, the fact that caste slurs were hurled at the victim by the perpetrator makes it a religiously motivated hate crime against the victim. Additionally, the physical assault and death threats significantly escalated the gravity of the incident. When the victim confronted the accused after discovering his deception, she was met not only with violence but also with threats to kill and bury her at gunpoint. Rather than being an isolated altercation, the assault formed part of the continuum of abuse that began with identity-based deception and financial exploitation, culminating in physical intimidation aimed at silencing the victim and preventing her from seeking justice. This incident was also not an isolated one. In recent years, several similar cases have emerged in which Muslim men posed as Hindu or Indian Army personnel to gain the trust of Hindu women before exploiting them. For instance, in Faridabad, Haryana, Zulfiqar Ahmed assumed the identity of "Krishna" and falsely presented himself as an Indian Army soldier to lure a Hindu woman into a relationship, after which she was subjected to sexual abuse, forced religious conversion, and prolonged coercion. In another case from Lucknow, Haider Ali posed as a Hindu Army officer under the name "Hardik" and was found to have targeted nearly 20 Hindu women, exploiting them sexually and financially. Similarly, Mohammad Shehbaz created the fake identity of "Major Harshit Chaudhary", posing as a Hindu Army officer to marry and deceive a Hindu woman, while investigations revealed that he had used the same modus operandi to defraud at least 24 women. The recurrence of such incidents indicates that these acts were rooted in religious animosity, with Hindu women being deliberately targeted through the concealment of the perpetrators' Muslim identity and the adoption of false Hindu or Indian Army identities to facilitate deception, exploitation, and abuse. Taken together, the identity-based deception, financial exploitation, and the subsequent assault, intimidation, and death threats faced by the Hindu victim, this case demonstrates a pattern of abuse rooted in religious animosity. The targeting of the victim through concealment of the accused's religious identity, followed by violence when the deception was exposed, provides grounds to document the incident as a religiously motivated hate crime. Disclaimer: The perpetrator count has been recorded as six based on the FIR registered by the police, which names Mohammad Arman and five of his family members as accused. Disclaimer: It is important to clarify that none of the media sources covering this case have specified the exact date when the victim's ordeal began, though it is mentioned that she came into contact with the accused in January 2026. Thus, to document this case, we have used an indicative date, 7 January 2026, as a placeholder to represent the beginning of her suffering. While media coverage of the incident emerged on 7 July 2026, the Hinduphobia Tracker records the incident based on when the victim’s ordeal began, not when it was reported.
