Case Summary

In Tarsaur village, Jalaun district, Uttar Pradesh, the priest of Badi Mata Mandir was attacked and brutally beaten by unknown miscreants while on his way for daily puja. The priest had received death threats for complaining about encroachment on the temple's access path and adjoining compost‑pit land. The priest, identified as Girija Shankar, also known as Girjole, stated that some villagers had encroached upon the public path leading to the temple and the land of the compost pit. Devotees had faced significant difficulties in reaching the temple. He had first raised the matter with the Jalaun SDM on 13 February 2026. When no action followed, he escalated the complaint to the Jansunwai portal on 15 June 2026. According to the priest, the encroaching party had not removed the obstruction after either complaint. Instead, he stated that he had begun receiving threats in the period following his complaints, including threats to his life and warnings that he would be implicated in a false case if he pursued the matter further. The threats culminated in a physical assault. While walking to the temple for his daily puja, the priest was stopped by the accused, who verbally abused him and beat him with sticks. The commotion had drawn nearby residents to the spot, at which point the accused fled, repeating the death threat as they left. Police from Sirsa Kalar station had reached the location following the incident. Both parties were called to the station for questioning, and the priest was sent for a medical examination. Station House Officer Varun Pratap Singh stated that further legal action would depend on the outcome of the medical report, the evidence gathered, and the ongoing investigation. As of this report, the identity, number, and background of the accused remained unestablished. No FIR sections, arrests, or formal charges had been confirmed at the time of reporting.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category - Attack not resulting in death. Within this, the selected subcategory is "Attacked for opposing radicals or trying to save a victim." In several cases, Hindus are attacked for opposing religiously motivated crimes being committed against a fellow Hindu or simply for voicing an opinion opposing radical elements, who either have in the past or continue to persecute Hindus. In such cases, the initial attack against the victim, against which the Hindu was trying to defend the victim, would also need to be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime. Since the initial crime itself was religiously motivated and the subsequent crime of attempting to save the victim or speaking against the radical elements ends up inviting a violent attack, it would also be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime under this category. Another category selected is: Attack on Hindu religious representations. The selected subcategory is: Encroachment or illicit takeover of temple land/land near the temple. This case was included in the Hinduphobia Tracker because the violence arose from a dispute over land belonging to a Hindu temple, making the attack inseparable from the religious character of the property involved. The assault was not an isolated act of violence but occurred in the course of resisting the protection and restoration of a space that Hindus regarded as sacred. Moreover, the attack followed efforts to safeguard temple land from unlawful occupation, demonstrating that violence was used to discourage those who sought to defend a Hindu religious institution. By targeting an individual associated with protecting the temple and opposing the encroachment, the perpetrators attempted to intimidate resistance and ensure that their unlawful control over the sacred property remained unchallenged. Consequently, the assault extended beyond the individual victim and became an attack on anyone standing against such actions. For Hindus, a temple is far more than a structure or a brick-and-mortar building; it is considered the literal house of the divine, a sacred space where the material world meets the spiritual realm. Known as a Mandir or Devalaya, the temple serves as an anchor for the community's collective faith, a sanctuary for quiet contemplation, and the central hub for daily rituals, festivals, and spiritual devotion. The loss or targeting of such a space directly strikes at the community's freedom to practice their faith, threatening the continuity of traditions passed down through generations. Within Hindu tradition, the sanctity of a temple extends completely to the land upon which it is built. The temple land itself is viewed as consecrated property, chosen through specific spiritual criteria and dedicated entirely to the deity through formal rituals. Once land is designated for a temple, it ceases to be mere commercial real estate; it is considered divine property held in trust for the deity. The ground is seen as infused with spiritual energy, meant solely for the performance of sacred rites and religious gatherings in devotion. Consequently, the act of illegally encroaching upon Hindu temple land directly violates and undermines the sanctity of this consecrated ground, delivering a profound shock to Hindu religious sentiments. Forcing commercial or unauthorised structures onto property dedicated to the divine is a profound act of disrespect to the Hindu faith and its adherents. This physical takeover actively prevents and disrupts the performance of traditional rituals, prayers, and festivals, denying local devotees the ability to peacefully follow their religious practices within the temple premises and turning a place of peace into a site of conflict. Furthermore, the encroachment itself amounted to an affront to Hindu religious rights because, in Hindu belief, a temple and its surrounding premises formed an inseparable sacred space dedicated to the deity. Any unlawful occupation or takeover of such land violated not merely property rights but also the sanctity attached to the temple. The subsequent use of violence reinforced the intent to assert control over that sacred space through intimidation, thereby directly harming the religious interests and sentiments of the Hindu community. Disclaimer: Hinduphobia Tracker recorded the date of the incident when the victim's ordeal had begun rather than the date on which it had been reported. Although this incident had been reported on 5 July 2026, the Hinduphobia Tracker recorded the case under 13 February 2026, as the date of encroachment had not been specified, but the date on which the complaint had been filed, as mentioned in the report, had originated on 13 February 2026; that date had been used for documentation purposes.
