Case Summary

In the Barabanki district in Uttar Pradesh, a Hindu woman was coerced into religious conversion and marriage by a Muslim man named Alam. Police arrested the accused after he abducted the young woman, pressured her to convert to his religion, and attempted to marry her through a court marriage. According to reports, Alam, a vegetable vendor from the Ramnagar police station area, lured the young woman away from her family and kept her under his control. The victim's family stated that Alam, who operated a vegetable stall near the police station premises, persuaded their daughter to leave with him and subsequently took her away. On the afternoon of June 19, 2026 (Friday), Alam reportedly brought the woman to the Barabanki district court premises to complete a court marriage. However, some lawyers present at the court became suspicious and stopped the couple for questioning. During the interaction, concerns regarding religious conversion came to light, prompting the lawyers to inform the police immediately. The victim's family stated that the accused had been pressuring her not only to marry him but also to change her religion. They further confirmed that she had been kept under his influence as part of a planned effort to secure her conversion and marriage. Before the marriage formalities could be completed, the police arrived at the court premises and detained the accused. Based on the victim's complaint, police registered a case against Alam under charges relating to abduction, attempting to force a religious conversion, criminal intimidation, and other relevant provisions of law. Authorities subsequently arrested the accused and initiated an investigation into the matter. Ramnagar Police Station Inspector Arun Singh confirmed that a case had been registered and the accused had been taken into custody. Police are recording statements from both the victim and the accused and have stated that further legal action will be taken based on the investigation's findings.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This incident has been added to the tracker under the primary category- Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. Under this, the selected subcategory is: Forced conversion before marriage. In such cases, a non-Hindu man is in a relationship with a Hindu woman when the pressure to convert her religion begins to manifest. In such cases, typically, two patterns emerge. First, when the relationship is consensual, and the religious identity of the perpetrator is known to the Hindu woman in the relationship, however, at some point during the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts to force the victim to convert her religion and give up her Hindu religious identity. The second is when the woman gets into a marriage with the man, pretending to share her faith. Later, when the truth is revealed, the man starts pressuring the woman to convert her religion and give up her religious identity. In both situations, the methods used to force the victim to convert her religion often revolve around force-feeding beef, forcing her to wear hijab, forcing her to read the Kalma or even pressurising the victim to do ‘Nikah’, which is marriage under Islamic law, with a prerequisite being conversion to Islam. Cases where a Hindu woman consensually converts to Islam in a relationship will be left out of the hate crime database, even though it could be argued in several cases that the conversion was a result of religious brainwashing. This case constitutes a religiously motivated hate crime because the victim was abducted and subjected to pressure to abandon her faith and adopt Islam. The religious dimension of the incident is evident from the fact that police invoked provisions relating to unlawful religious conversion and registered a case for attempting to force a change in the victim's religion. The attempt to alter the victim's religious identity was therefore not incidental to the offence but formed a central part of the allegations. According to the complaint, the accused did not merely seek a relationship or marriage with the victim. He removed her from the protection of her family, kept her under his control, and exerted pressure on her to both marry him and convert her religion. This sequence is significant because the effort to change the victim's faith appears to have accompanied and reinforced the effort to gain control over her personal choices and future. Religious belief is a matter of individual conscience and free choice. Any attempt to secure conversion through abduction, coercion, intimidation, isolation, or undue pressure undermines that principle. The allegations in this case suggest that the victim's ability to make independent decisions regarding her faith may have been compromised by the circumstances in which she was placed. The victim's Hindu identity was not incidental to the incident. According to the complaint, the accused sought not only to marry her but also to change her religion. The objective was therefore not simply emotional or personal but strategic. The ultimate goal was to alienate the victim from her Hindu faith and assimilate her into a different religious identity. In such cases, once that goal is achieved, the victim is frequently discarded, as her "use" in this ideological mission is considered complete. This pattern stems from a supremacist interpretation of Abrahamic religious doctrine, where those who do not follow the same faith are viewed as inferior, impure, or needing to be corrected. In such a worldview, conversion is not an invitation but an obligation. The non-believer is not respected as different, but is dehumanised until they conform. As a result, Hindus are often targeted not for personal reasons but because of their religious identity. The violence, manipulation, and betrayal involved in these cases are not isolated acts of cruelty. They are manifestations of an underlying ideological hostility towards Hinduism, its traditions, and its followers. This is why such cases must be recognised and documented as religiously motivated hate crimes. The victims are not just exploited individuals; they are Hindus targeted for being Hindu.
