Case Summary

In Ahmedabad, Gujarat, a widowed Hindu woman was lured into a relationship by a Muslim man posing as a Hindu. The victim said that she was deceived by a Muslim man, Karim Rafiqbhai Sipaani, who introduced himself as a Hindu man named "Aditya Patel" on a matrimonial website. According to the woman, the accused presented himself as a well-educated businessman running a successful enterprise and produced fabricated identity documents, including a Permanent Account Number card, Aadhaar card, ration card and driving licence, all bearing the name Aditya Patel. Trusting these representations, the woman remained in contact with him for nearly four to five months. The deception came to light when the woman received a phone call from the accused, and his name appeared as "Karim" on the Truecaller application instead of Aditya Patel. The discrepancy immediately aroused her suspicion, prompting her to independently verify the address mentioned on the documents provided by him. Upon visiting the location, she found that no person named Aditya Patel resided there, reinforcing her belief that she had been misled through a fabricated identity. Instead of continuing the relationship, the woman decided to expose the Muslim man and approached members of Bajrang Dal for assistance. According to Bajrang Dal leader Jwalit Mehta, their inquiry revealed that the man identifying himself as Aditya Patel was, in fact, Karim Rafiqbhai Sipaani, a resident of Kadi, Gujarat. It was further stated that Karim was already married but had been posing as a widower on matrimonial platforms in order to target widowed and divorced Hindu women. The victim later addressed a press conference in the presence of Bajrang Dal members and recounted her experience. During the event, organisation representatives stated that they examined the accused's mobile phone and found chats with numerous women, along with thousands of objectionable photographs and videos. They further stated that profiles of more than twenty Hindu women were stored on the device, suggesting that widowed and divorced women had been specifically targeted through the use of a fake Hindu identity. Bajrang Dal members also stated that multiple forged identity documents were recovered from the accused, including Permanent Account Number cards, Aadhaar cards, passports, driving licences and ration cards bearing the identity of "Aditya Patel". These documents had been used to create a false Hindu identity and gain the confidence of women using matrimonial websites. Following the woman's complaint, a case was registered at the Ahmedabad West Women's Crime Branch. The Ahmedabad Crime Branch subsequently arrested Karim Rafiqbhai Sipaani and initiated a further investigation into the matter. At the time of writing this report, the police were examining whether any other women had been similarly deceived through the use of fabricated identities and forged documents. Commenting on the incident, Bajrang Dal leader Jwalit Mehta urged matrimonial platforms to strengthen their verification processes and ensure that user profiles and supporting documents were properly authenticated before being made available to the public. The police also advised citizens to exercise caution while interacting with strangers on matrimonial websites and social media platforms and to independently verify all documents and personal details before establishing trust or entering into a relationship.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

The primary category selected in this case is: Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. The subcategory selected is: Man pretends to be Hindu. The tertiary category selected is: Name Changed, Pattern of targeting Hindu women. When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. This case is a clear example of a religiously motivated hate crime rooted in hostility towards the Hindu faith and the Hindu community because a widowed Hindu woman was deliberately lured into a relationship by a Muslim man who concealed his identity behind a fake Hindu name and forged legal documents. The accused presented himself as "Aditya Patel" and used fabricated identity records to gain the victim's trust, preventing her from making an informed decision about entering the relationship. The investigation and statements made during the press conference further indicated that the same false Hindu identity had been used to approach and target more than twenty widowed and divorced Hindu women on matrimonial platforms. The repeated use of a fabricated Hindu identity to establish relationships with Hindu women demonstrates a systematic pattern of selectively targeting victims on the basis of their religious identity, making the incident a clear case of targeted victimisation directed at members of the Hindu community. The victim was deceived into pursuing a matrimonial relationship by a Muslim man pretending to be Hindu. Matrimonial platforms are built upon the expectation that users provide truthful personal information, and by fabricating a Hindu identity through the name "Aditya Patel" and forged identity documents, the accused deprived the woman of the ability to make a fully informed choice regarding whom she wished to marry or form a relationship with. The deception therefore extended beyond ordinary misrepresentation and directly interfered with her personal autonomy and religious considerations. The deliberate concealment of his real identity demonstrates a calculated strategy to exploit the trust of Hindu women who might not otherwise have entered into a relationship with him. The fact that the accused repeatedly used the same fabricated Hindu identity to approach more than twenty widowed and divorced Hindu women demonstrates a systematic pattern rather than an isolated act of deception. The accused's mobile phone contained chats with numerous women as well as thousands of objectionable photographs and videos. Within this framework, these materials are indicative of a broader pattern of sexual exploitation of the Hindu women he targeted through his fake Hindu identity. The repeated selection of Hindu women, combined with the use of forged Hindu identity documents and matrimonial platforms, points towards a coordinated and premeditated effort to identify, deceive and exploit victims on the basis of their religious identity. In this context, the sexual exploitation extends beyond the pursuit of sexual gratification and assumes the character of an act intended to degrade, humiliate and exercise power over women because they were targeted as Hindu women. By concealing his identity behind a fabricated Hindu persona and gaining the trust of widowed and divorced Hindu women, the accused reduced them to objects of exploitation while disregarding their religious identity, personal autonomy and informed consent. Such conduct dehumanises the victims by treating their faith as a vulnerability to be manipulated and exploited rather than respected. The combination of religious impersonation, the repeated targeting of Hindu women and the pattern of sexual exploitation therefore reflects victimisation that is inseparably intertwined with hostility towards the victims' religious identity. Since this case meets several parameters of a hate-driven offence, it is being added to the hate crime database of the Hinduphobia Tracker. Disclaimer: The Hinduphobia Tracker records incident dates on the basis of when the victim's ordeal begins, rather than when it is reported by the media. However, in the present case, the available media reports do not specify the exact date on which the victim's ordeal or suffering began. Accordingly, the date on which the incident was first reported in the media, 14 June 2026, has been selected as the indicative incident date. This date has been recorded for documentation purposes only and should not be construed as the confirmed date of the commencement of the offence. Although this case involves multiple Hindu victims, the currently available media reports specifically identify one widowed Hindu woman as the complainant and indicate that the accused targeted more than twenty widowed and divorced Hindu women through the same fabricated Hindu identity. In the absence of precise information regarding the total number of affected individuals, a conservative estimate of 21 victims has been recorded for documentation purposes only. This figure is provisional and may be revised if additional verified information becomes available.
