Case Summary
In Chand village, located a short distance from Chand police station in Kaimur district, miscreants vandalised a Ravidas Temple situated near the Girls' Middle School on the night of June 8, 2026 (Monday). The idol of Sant Ravidas installed in the temple was uprooted and thrown into a nearby garbage heap. As soon as information about the incident spread on the morning of June 9, 2026 (Tuesday), a large number of villagers gathered at the site. They expressed anger at the incident and demanded that the police investigate and take action against those responsible. Villagers stated that during the incident, a short circuit caused a fire inside the temple, resulting in some items kept there being damaged. The villagers later recovered the idol of Sant Ravidas from the garbage heap and demanded that the family of the person involved in the incident reinstall the idol in the temple. Residents said that their religious sentiments had been deeply hurt by such treatment of a sacred place of worship. They urged the administration to conduct an impartial investigation and take appropriate action against the culprits. Following the incident, local people have been keeping a close watch on the situation. Chand Police Station SHO Vipin Kumar stated that no formal complaint had been submitted by the villagers. He added that appropriate action would be taken after an application was received and an investigation was conducted.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This incident has been added under the category- Attack on Hindu religious representations. Within this, the subcategory selected is- Desecration of Hindu religious symbol. Icons and symbols or a religious representation of a spiritual ideal are widely revered in Hinduism. Iconography is of vital significance in the Hindu milieu. It helps connect people’s spiritual beliefs with the real world. Iconography within the Hindu faith takes several shapes and forms. Murtis are of most significance to Hindus, to which daily rituals, prayers and offerings are done. Besides the murtis, there are several other symbols which have deep significance in the Hindu faith – the Om and Swastika for example. Since these Hindu religious symbols hold paramount importance in Hinduism, any desecration of symbols, icons, murtis, religious representations and manifestations, is driven by animosity towards the faith itself which manifests itself through these murtis, icons and symbols. Therefore, any desecration of these Hindu religious symbols and representations is considered religiously motivated hate crimes under this category. The primary religious marker in this case was the deliberate targeting of a Hindu place of worship and the desecration of a sacred religious figure revered by devotees. The perpetrators did not merely damage property. They uprooted the idol of Sant Ravidas from the temple and discarded it in a garbage heap. This act carried a clear symbolic message because idols in Hinduism are not decorative objects but consecrated representations of revered spiritual figures and divine presence. By removing the idol from its sacred setting and throwing it into a place associated with waste and impurity, the perpetrators subjected a sacred object of worship to deliberate humiliation and degradation. It is important to mention here that, though the last update was that the miscreants were unknown, the action stemmed out of hatred against Hinduism and resulted in the desecration of the sacred temple and would therefore be considered a religiously motivated hate crime.
