Case Summary

In Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh, a Hindu woman was lured into a relationship by a Muslim man, Taj Ali. The accused abducted the victim to Gujarat, forcibly converted her religion, subjected her to physical abuse, and later attacked her with acid, leaving her severely injured. According to the victim's testimony, she came into contact with Taj Ali, originally a resident of Hata in Prayagraj and currently residing in Banki village in Santnagar, a few months earlier. He befriended her and developed a romantic relationship before taking her to Gujarat approximately four months earlier (February 2026). The victim stated that after taking her to Gujarat, Taj Ali forcibly converted her to Islam, married her and began living with her as his wife. She further stated that, after some time, he began harassing and physically assaulting her. According to the victim, the abuse escalated into daily beatings accompanied by verbal abuse. According to the victim, on 18 May 2026, following a physical assault, Taj Ali threw acid on her, causing severe burn injuries and leaving her in critical condition. He fled immediately after carrying out the attack. She initially received treatment at a hospital in Gujarat before being shifted to a medical college in Prayagraj. At the time of writing this report, she was undergoing treatment in Mirzapur. The victim also released a video on social media in which she identified Taj Ali as the person responsible for the acid attack and reiterated her statements that she had been lured into a relationship, forcibly converted, physically abused, and attacked. Based on a complaint lodged by the victim's sister-in-law, the Madihan Police registered a case against the accused on 7 June 2026. Acting on the complaint, the police launched a search operation and arrested Taj Ali near Sugapak village in the Madihan police station area on 8 June 2026 after he had remained absconding for several days. He was subsequently produced before a court and sent to jail. Further investigation into the matter was underway. The victim's family demanded strict action against the accused.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

The primary category selected in this case is: Crimes against in relationships or other sexual crimes. The subcategory selected is: Forced conversion before marraige. In such cases, a non-Hindu man is in a relationship with a Hindu woman when the pressure to convert her religion begins to manifest. In such cases, typically, two patterns emerge. First, when the relationship is consensual, and the religious identity of the perpetrator is known to the Hindu woman in the relationship, however, at some point during the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts to force the victim to convert her religion and give up her Hindu religious identity. The second is when the woman gets into a marriage with the man pretending to share her faith. Later, when the truth is revealed, the man starts pressuring the woman to convert her religion and give up her religious identity. In both the situations, the methods used to force the victim to convert her religion often revolve around force-feeding beef, forcing her to wear hijab, forcing her to read the Kalma or even pressurizing the victim to do ‘Nikah’, which is marriage under Islamic law, with a prerequisite being conversion to Islam. Cases where a Hindu woman consensually converts to Islam in a relationship will be left out of the hate crime database, even though it could be argued in several cases that the conversion was a result of religious brainwashing. This case is a clear example of a religiously motivated hate crime in which a Hindu woman was lured into a relationship by a Muslim man, abducted to Gujarat, forcibly converted to Islam, and subsequently subjected to repeated physical assault and an acid attack. The sequence of events reflects a continuous pattern of coercion and violence rather than isolated criminal acts. The victim first entered into a relationship, was then removed from her familiar environment, compelled to abandon her religion, and ultimately suffered brutal physical violence. The progression from emotional manipulation to forced religious conversion and finally to an acid attack demonstrates an escalating pattern of abuse in which the victim's religious identity forms a central element. Such conduct goes beyond interpersonal violence and represents an attack on the victim's autonomy, dignity, and freedom of conscience, making it a clear case of a religiously motivated hate crime directed at a Hindu woman. Although the Muslim perpetrator did not conceal his religious identity at the outset, the nature of the relationship indicated that the victim was led to believe that differences in religious identity would not constitute a barrier to their relationship. By presenting the relationship as one built on mutual trust and acceptance, the victim had no apparent reason to anticipate that her faith would later become the subject of coercion. However, the subsequent forcible conversion fundamentally altered the nature of that relationship and suggests that religious identity became a central objective rather than an incidental circumstance. The fact that the victim was ultimately compelled to abandon her faith demonstrates that the relationship served as the means through which control over her religious identity was established. This sequence of events indicates that the victim's Hindu identity was not merely incidental but became the very characteristic that was sought to be altered, making the crime one directed at her religious identity with the objective of replacing it through coercive conversion. The decision to take the victim away to Gujarat before forcing her to convert further illustrates a pattern of predatory behaviour designed to isolate and control her. Removing a victim from her family, friends, and community support structures significantly reduces her ability to seek assistance, resist coercion, or safely leave the abusive situation. Isolation is a recognised method of exercising domination over victims, particularly in cases involving coercive relationships. By relocating the victim to another state, the perpetrator created an environment in which she became increasingly dependent upon him and more vulnerable to manipulation and abuse. The subsequent forced conversion within this isolated setting reinforces the inference that geographical separation from her support network facilitated the perpetrator's objective of imposing a new religious identity upon her against her will. The combination of emotional manipulation, physical isolation, and religious coercion demonstrates a deliberate pattern of predatory conduct. The forcible conversion of the victim to Islam, followed by the perpetrator treating her as his wife, constitutes a profound violation of her religious autonomy, personal liberty, and fundamental right to freely profess and practise the religion of her choice. Freedom of conscience is an essential component of individual dignity, and any attempt to compel a person to abandon their faith strikes at the core of that freedom. Forced conversion is not merely a change in religious affiliation but an act that seeks to replace a person's existing religious identity through coercion rather than free will. In this case, the victim's Hindu identity was effectively treated as something that had to be discarded before the relationship could continue on the perpetrator's terms. Such conduct transforms religion into a tool of domination, where conversion becomes a mechanism for asserting control over the victim and reshaping her identity according to the perpetrator's wishes. The forced abandonment of her faith therefore represents both an assault on her individual rights and an attack on her religious identity. The physical abuse that followed the forced conversion, culminating in an acid attack, further intensified the gravity of the offence and demonstrates an escalating pattern of violence. According to the victim's account, she was subjected to repeated physical assaults before the perpetrator threw acid on her, causing severe burn injuries and requiring prolonged medical treatment. Acid attacks are among the most brutal forms of violence, often resulting in permanent disfigurement, lifelong physical pain, psychological trauma, and social exclusion. When viewed together with the forced conversion and sustained abuse, the attack reflects not a single impulsive act but a continuing pattern of coercion, intimidation, and violence directed against the victim. The brutality of the acid attack significantly aggravates the offence, illustrating the extreme consequences that followed the victim's exploitation and reinforcing the seriousness of the hostility and domination exercised against her. Overall, since this case meets several parameters of a religiously driven offence, it is being added to the hate crime database of the Hinduphobia Tracker. Disclaimer: The Hinduphobia Tracker records incident dates based on when the victim's ordeal begins rather than when the incident is first reported by the media. However, in the present case, media reports do not specify the exact date on which the victim's ordeal commenced. The reports state that the victim was lured by the accused and taken to Gujarat in February 2026, but do not provide a precise date for this occurrence. The incident first came to light through media reports published on 8 June 2026. Accordingly, by taking both these pieces of information into consideration, an indicative incident date of 8 February 2026 has been recorded for documentation purposes only.
