The incident took place at around 10:30 pm on 6 June 2026 when the victim was confronted by a group of seven Muslim men who pressured him to consume meat. When he refused, an altercation ensued, following which the accused launched a violent assault on him. During the attack, Kapil Chauhan was stabbed multiple times in the face and chest, leaving him severely injured. Owing to the severity of the assault, he collapsed at the scene. The accused fled after carrying out the attack. Local residents rushed the victim to a nearby hospital, where he was admitted for treatment. His condition was stated to be serious, and treatment was ongoing. Following the incident, police officers reached the spot and initiated an investigation. Why it is Hate Crime ?

The primary category selected in this case is- Attack not resulting in death. The subcategory selected is- Attacked for Hindu identity. In several cases, Hindus are attacked merely for their Hindu identity without any perceived provocation. A classic example of this category of religiously motivated hate crime is a murder in 2016. 7 ISIS terrorists were convicted for shooting a school principal in Kanpur because they got ‘triggered’ seeing the Kalava on his wrist and tilak that he had put. In this, the Hindu victim had offered no provocation except for his Hindu religious identity. The motivation for the murder was purely religious, driven by religious supremacy. Such cases where Hindus are targeted merely for their religious identity would be documented as a hate crime under this category. The other subcategory selected is- Attacked for opposing radicals or trying to save victim. In several cases, Hindus are attacked for opposing religiously motivated crimes being committed against a fellow Hindu or simply for voicing an opinion opposing radical elements, who either have in the past or continue to persecute Hindus. In such cases, the initial attack against the victim, against which the Hindu was trying to defend the victim, would also need to be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime. Since the initial crime itself was religiously motivated and the subsequent crime of attempting to save the victim or speaking against the radical elements ends up inviting a violent attack, it would also be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime under this category. This case is a clear instance of a hate crime due to the specific targeting of the victim's religious identity and the forced coercion against his faith. The assault on Kapil Chauhan was not a random act of violence, but a direct consequence of his refusal to engage in a practice that violates his religious beliefs. Being confronted by individuals from the Muslim community who forcibly demanded he consume meat, knowing it contradicted his faith beliefs, demonstrates an intent to target him based specifically on his Hindu identity. The subsequent violent retaliation following his refusal indicates that the hostility was rooted in anti-Hindu animosity. In this case, the victim was forced to consume meat, a practice that is considered impure within the framework of Hindu dietary practices. Many Hindus practice strict vegetarianism for religious purposes, believing that taking animal life is a sin, and thus abstain from meat to maintain their spiritual sanctity. Furthermore, many individuals adopt a strict "sattvic" (vegetarian and puritanical) lifestyle later in life to preserve the purity of their personal and religious beliefs. The fact that the perpetrators forcibly attempted to compel the Hindu victim to eat meat showcases that they were targeting him for his Hindu identity, seeking to desecrate sacred aspects of his faith. This targeted violation demonstrates deep-seated religious hatred toward Hinduism and its adherents, making it a clear case of a hate crime rooted in anti-Hindu hostility. When the Hindu victim refused to eat meat, he was exercising his fundamental right to practice, uphold, and protect his religious beliefs. Rather than respecting this boundary, the accused responded with extreme, potentially fatal violence, stabbing him multiple times in the face and chest. This extreme escalation directly exposes the undercurrent of anti-Hindu hatred driving the assault, as the violence was not a reaction to a personal dispute but a punitive response to a Hindu individual refusing to submit to the desecration of his faith. By choosing to inflict brutal, life-threatening injuries rather than permit the victim to maintain his religious purity, the perpetrators demonstrated that his adherence to Hindu tenets was itself the target of their hostility. The highly disproportionate nature of the attack, transforming a refusal of food and faith desecration into a bloody and targeted assault, strengthens the conclusion that the violence was a direct manifestation of religious animosity. The transition from verbal coercion to an immediate, lethal physical onslaught after the victim declined to act against his conscience proves that the assault was designed to punish his religious conviction. This reaction highlights a deep-seated intolerance toward the visible practice of Hindu beliefs, demonstrating that the victim was targeted because of his faith and his refusal to compromise it, making the incident a definitive example of a hate crime rooted in explicit anti-Hindu hostility. Overall, since this case meets several parameters of a religiously driven offence, it is being added to the hate crime database of the Hinduphobia Tracker.
