Case Summary

In Karnataka, Raichu, a 30-year-old Hindu man from Yapaladinni village, was murdered for intervening and protecting a 14-year-old Hindu girl from being abducted by Muslim men, Aslam and Hussain. The accused were taking away a 14-year-old Hindu girl in the middle of the night. The victim was strangled when he questioned the accused and attempted to stop them from taking the minor girl away. According to reports, the incident occurred at night while Ishappa was resting on the terrace of his house. At around 2 a.m., he noticed Aslam, Hussain and their associates taking a 14-year-old Hindu girl from the neighbourhood. Upon recognising the girl as his friend Anjaneya's relative, he immediately came down from the terrace and confronted the group. He asked them where they were taking the minor girl and tried to stop them. The confrontation quickly turned violent. Enraged by Ishappa's intervention, Aslam and Hussain attacked him and strangled him with a wire. Police stated that the accused first assaulted him with a stick and then strangled him using a rope or wire. Ishappa died on the spot due to the assault. After killing him, the accused placed the body of the victim in front of the girl’s house and fled from the scene. The incident sparked outrage in Yapaladinni village. Family members and villagers staged protests, demanding the immediate arrest of the accused and strict action against them. Additional police personnel were deployed in the area to maintain law and order as tensions escalated. A case was registered at Yapaladinni Police Station. Following the protests and police investigation, Aslam and Hussain were arrested. Police launched further investigations into the circumstances surrounding the attempted abduction of the minor Hindu girl and the murder of Ishappa.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

In this case, the most striking aspect was that a Hindu man lost his life while attempting to protect a minor Hindu girl who was being taken away in the middle of the night by the accused. The violence inflicted upon him was not the result of a prolonged altercation or a personal dispute. Rather, it occurred when he questioned the actions of the accused and sought to prevent them from taking the girl away. The fact that he was beaten, strangled to death, and his body was subsequently left in front of the girl's house pointed to a level of brutality that went far beyond a momentary confrontation. The circumstances of the crime naturally raised serious concerns. A man who intervened on behalf of a minor girl was met with lethal violence, suggesting that the accused were determined to prevent any resistance to their actions. The murder appeared to have been committed not merely to silence an objection but to eliminate the only person who stood in the way of taking the girl away. Such incidents warranted close scrutiny because crimes committed in the context of attempts to remove or exploit vulnerable Hindu girls had, in some instances, been linked to deeper forms of hostility, coercion, or identity-based targeting. At the same time, the Hinduphobia Tracker followed a strict evidence-based methodology and did not classify a case as a hate crime unless there was sufficient evidence suggesting the same. While the nature of the violence raised legitimate questions, there was no direct evidence linking the attack to the victim's Hindu identity. Further, the victim's family had not publicly attributed the crime to religious hostility. Accordingly, the case was placed in the "Undecided" category. The circumstances surrounding the abduction of the minor Hindu girl and the subsequent murder raised legitimate questions that merited further investigation. However, in the absence of evidence showing that the victim was targeted because of his Hindu identity or that anti-Hindu bias played a role in the crime, the available material remained insufficient to classify the incident as a religiously motivated hate crime. Should such evidence come to light in the future, the classification would be reviewed and updated accordingly.
