Minor Hindu boy murdered in cold blood for plucking watermelon from his own family’s farmland by Muslim men in Agra, Uttar Pradesh
Case Summary
In Agra, Uttar Pradesh, a 13-year-old minor Hindu boy, Amrit Kushwaha, was brutally murdered for plucking a watermelon from his family's farmland by Muslim men. According to locals, his throat had been slit with a sharp weapon, and his eyes were also gouged out. The incident occurred in Randhirpura village under the Basai Jagner police station area. Amrit had left his home around noon on 1 May 2026 after informing his sister that he was going to bring a watermelon from the family field. The farmland belonged to his father, Naresh Kushwaha, and had been leased to Muslim farmers who were cultivating watermelons and muskmelons. When the minor boy did not return home by evening, his family began searching for him. His sister later went to the field in search of him and found his blood-soaked body lying on a path near the farmland. A bag containing a watermelon was found near the body along with a blood-stained knife. The discovery triggered panic and grief in the village, and local residents gathered at the spot after hearing the sister's cries. According to the complaint filed by Amrit's father, the boy was killed by Muslim men working on the leased farmland. Reports mentioned that while the initial dispute centred around plucking watermelons, investigations revealed a simmering financial dispute between the boy's father and the farming partners over outstanding payments for the leased land. The FIR named around 13 people, including Saddam, Arshad, Rashid, Amer, Nadim and Riyaz Ahmed. Police stated that the accused were engaged in farming activities on the Kushwaha family's land and were their farming partners. Following the murder, villagers staged protests and blocked roads, demanding action against the accused. The body of the deceased was sent for post-mortem examination after police completed the necessary procedures. DCP West Aditya Kumar said, “Upon receiving information about the incident, the Basai Jagner police station immediately conducted the panchayatnama of the deceased and arranged for a postmortem. Based on the received complaint, on 01.05.2026, a case was registered under relevant sections, and the two named accused were arrested with statutory proceedings initiated; further statutory proceedings are underway.” The DCP further claimed that the information regarding the deceased juvenile’s eyes being gouged out was false and misleading. It is important to mention here that at the time of documenting this incident, the Police Commissionerate of Agra had deleted its Tweet posted on May 2 2026, where it had confirmed that, that the body of the minor Hindu child had been sent for post mortem and based on the received complaint, on 1 May 2026, a case was registered under relevant sections, and the two named accused were arrested, and legal proceedings were initiated.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, a Hindu minor was killed by Muslim individuals in an act of severe violence. The sheer brutality of the attack raises serious concerns. According to local residents, the child's throat was slit, and his eyes were gouged out before his body was recovered. Such extreme violence appears grossly disproportionate to the reported trigger of the dispute. It is difficult to reconcile such brutality with a minor altercation over plucking watermelons. This leads one to believe that deeper motives may have been at play. There is a well-documented precedent where hostility towards the Hindu community has played a significant role in similar violent incidents. These acts are rarely isolated instances of violence but rather stem from entrenched religious intolerance and animosity, fitting into a broader pattern of anti-Hindu hatred. Nevertheless, the Hinduphobia Tracker follows a strict evidence-based methodology and does not classify a case as a hate crime unless there is sufficient evidence suggesting the same. While the nature of the violence raises legitimate questions, there is currently no direct evidence linking the attack to the victim's Hindu identity. Further, the victim's family has not publicly attributed the crime to religious hostility. Accordingly, the case has been placed in the "Undecided" category. Should further evidence emerge indicating that the victim was targeted because he was Hindu, or that religious bias played a role in the attack, the classification will be reviewed and updated accordingly.
