Case Summary

In the Yavatmal district of Maharashtra, Hindu activist and Bajrang Dal member Gajanan Suroshe was brutally beaten to death by a group of Muslim cow smugglers after he attempted to stop the illegal smuggling of cattle. Several Muslim perpetrators were identified in the case, including Sheikh Sultan Alavali, Alavali Sheikh, Irfan Sheikh, Ibrahim Sheikh, Asif Sheikh, Ayaz Qazi, and Arif Sheikh. Along with the named accused, around 15 other Muslim individuals were also involved in the attack. Police arrested some of the named accused and launched a search operation for the remaining perpetrators. As per reports, the victim, Gajanan Suroshe, was a resident of Vadad-Mudana village in Mahagaon tehsil and was associated with the Bajrang Dal, a Hindu organisation. Late on the night of 24 May 2026, Bajrang Dal workers received information that a large number of cows were being illegally smuggled along the Nagpur–Tuljapur National Highway. Following the information, activists began surveillance near the Bijora toll post. During this time, a suspicious pickup truck was seen speeding past, and the activists suspected that it was transporting cattle illegally. Gajanan Suroshe arrived in his car and began chasing the Muslim smugglers’ vehicle. The accused then left the highway and fled towards Sukali village near Umarkhed, where other accused who were already present surrounded Gajanan Suroshe’s car. The Hindu activist was forcibly dragged out of the vehicle and brutally assaulted with stones, iron rods, and wooden sticks. Locals attempted to take him to a hospital for treatment, but he succumbed to his injuries on the way. Based on a complaint filed by the victim’s brother, Dnyaneshwar Suroshe, police registered a case under Sections 109(1), 103(1), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges of murder.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

The primary category selected in this case is- Attack resulting in death. The subcategory selected is- Attacked for opposing radicals or trying to save victim. In several cases, Hindus are attacked for opposing religiously motivated crimes being committed against a fellow Hindu or simply for voicing an opinion opposing radical elements, who either have in the past or continue to persecute Hindus. In such cases, the initial attack against the victim, against which the Hindu was trying to defend the victim, would also need to be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime. Since the initial crime itself was religiously motivated and the subsequent crime of attempting to save the victim or speaking against the radical elements ends up inviting a violent attack, it would also be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime. Under this category, cases where the attack led to the death of the Hindu victim/s would be documented. This case involves the murder of a Hindu activist while he was attempting to protect cows, which hold deep religious significance in Hinduism. The nature of the attack, along with its brutality and coordinated execution by a large group of Muslim perpetrators armed with weapons, demonstrates that this was not a random act of violence but a hate crime rooted in animosity towards the Hindu victim because of his religious identity and his sacred commitment to protecting cows, an act regarded as virtuous in Hinduism. In Hindu tradition, cows are regarded as sacred, and their protection is considered not merely a cultural practice but a deeply rooted religious and moral duty for all Hindus. Protecting cows is viewed by all Hindu devotees as a virtuous act and an important expression of their religious faith and commitment to Hindu values. The cow is revered in Hinduism as a symbol of compassion, nourishment, and sacred life, and is referred to as “Gau Mata” (Mother Cow). Consequently, Hindus consider the protection of cows to be a righteous and spiritually significant act closely tied to their religious identity and beliefs. The Hindu activist, in this case, was acting in furtherance of this religious belief and duty by attempting to stop the illegal smuggling of cattle. The fact that the Muslim perpetrators brutally killed him while he was performing what he considered a sacred religious obligation highlights a deep-seated hostility towards the Hindu victim because of his religious identity and his association with cow protection, a practice intrinsically linked to Hindu religious beliefs. The nature of the attack, therefore, reflects a clear case of violence targeting a Hindu individual engaged in the protection of a sacred symbol of Hinduism, thereby amounting to a hate crime rooted in anti-Hindu animosity. Some may attempt to argue that the incident was merely a spontaneous act of rage that escalated into violence. However, the circumstances of the attack indicate otherwise. Initially, a smaller group of perpetrators was involved, but later several more individuals joined them, following which the Hindu activist was surrounded and attacked by a large group armed with stones, iron rods, and wooden sticks. The sheer disproportionate scale of the assault, the number of perpetrators involved, and the use of weapons demonstrated a coordinated and brutal attack rather than an isolated or impulsive reaction. If the objective had merely been to evade capture or escape from the victim, the perpetrators could have restrained him, fled the scene, or used non-lethal force. Instead, the victim was dragged out of his vehicle and violently beaten to death. This level of brutality and the collective nature of the assault reflected deliberate and targeted violence against the Hindu activist because of his role in opposing cow smuggling and protecting cows, which are sacred in Hinduism. The attack, therefore, showcased deep-rooted hostility towards the victim’s Hindu identity and religious beliefs, making it a clear case of a religiously motivated hate crime. Given that this case meets the parameters of a religiously driven hate crime, it is being added to the hate crime database of the Hinduphobia Tracker.
