Hindu residents attacked with blade by Muslims for opposing Bakrid sacrifice within housing society
Case Summary
Hindu residents in Mira Road, Thane, Mumbai, were attacked by a Muslim mob after objecting to the keeping of goats and preparations for the Bakrid sacrifice inside a residential housing society. Three Hindus sustained serious injuries during the violence, including one Hindu youth who was attacked with a blade. The controversy erupted at the Srishti Complex in the Poonam Cluster area near Mira Road on 24 May 2026 after some Muslim residents brought more than two dozen goats into the society premises ahead of Bakrid qurbani and housed them inside an illegal shed constructed within the complex. According to residents, the structure was erected after Muslim office-bearers of the society permitted the enclosure without holding an authorised society meeting, prompting objections from Hindu residents. Reports stated that around 25 goats had been brought into the residential premises. While permission had reportedly been sought to keep the animals temporarily, Hindu residents opposed the arrangement after learning that a dedicated enclosure had been constructed inside the common society area without the consent of the wider housing community. Hindu residents and Hindu organisations maintained that society rules prohibited such activities and argued that no religious group should be exempt from those regulations. As tensions escalated, BJP corporators, Hindu organisation members, and local Hindu residents approached both the police and the municipal corporation, demanding action against the illegal structure and possible illegal qurbani arrangements inside the housing society. Acting on the complaints, municipal authorities demolished the shed. However, tensions intensified again during the late hours of 26 May 2026 when Muslim residents attempted to rebuild the demolished illegal structure. Hindu residents stated that Hindu activists who confronted the reconstruction effort were attacked during the dispute. During the confrontation, a Muslim man, Sheikh Abul Rahim Sheikh, assaulted a Hindu youth with a blade, triggering a violent communal clash inside the residential complex. Videos and eyewitness accounts from the scene showed panic and chaos inside the society premises as groups gathered during the late-night confrontation. Three Hindus were reportedly injured in the violence. The conflict unfolded in the wider context of growing objections from Hindu residents across Mira Road to the keeping of goats and the preparations for the Bakrid sacrifice in common residential spaces. Hindu residents consistently maintained that their opposition centred on preserving society regulations and preventing sacrificial arrangements within shared housing premises. Muslim residents, meanwhile, insisted on carrying out Bakrid rituals in accordance with their religious customs and stated that no laws had been violated. Following the violence, police increased deployment across sensitive localities in Mira Road ahead of Bakrid and conducted flag marches in several housing societies, including JP North Private Housing Society. Security personnel were stationed around affected residential complexes to prevent further clashes. Police also examined CCTV footage from the area and initiated an investigation into the violence and the blade attack on the Hindu youth. A criminal case was registered in connection with the attack, and police arrested the 44-year-old Sheikh Abul Rahim Sheikh. The incident also triggered political reactions. BJP MLA Sanjay Upadhyay warned against illegal slaughter activities and stated that pigs would be brought to such places as a form of protest. Referring to similar disputes in Mumbai and Mira Road housing societies, he accused sections of the minority community of disregarding constitutional norms and following Sharia practices inside residential spaces. Shiv Sena leader and Maharashtra minister Pratap Sarnaik appealed for restraint and urged all communities living in housing societies to respect each other’s sentiments. He also alleged that outsiders were attempting to inflame tensions. Samajwadi Party leader Abu Azmi stated that no illegal qurbani should be permitted and urged authorities to ensure that sacrifices, where legally allowed, were conducted strictly within enclosed spaces and in accordance with official guidelines. Meanwhile, BJP leaders in Mumbai, including Mayor Ritu Tawde, urged the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to issue a blanket ban on goat sacrifice inside housing societies and chawls during Bakrid. They argued that despite existing regulations governing religious slaughter, goats continued to be brought into residential localities. BMC officials, however, stated that strict guidelines for such practices were already in place. Separately, the Maharashtra government directed police to invoke stringent provisions of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against cattle smugglers and illegal slaughterhouses ahead of Bakrid. Following the outrage, goats were removed from the housing society, videos of which went viral on social media.

Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category - Attack not resulting in death. Within this, the subcategory selected is - Attacked for opposing radicals or trying to save victim. In several cases, Hindus are attacked for opposing religiously motivated crimes being committed against a fellow Hindu or simply for voicing an opinion opposing radical elements, who either have in the past or continue to persecute Hindus. In such cases, the initial attack against the victim, against which the Hindu was trying to defend the victim, would also need to be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime. Since the initial crime itself was religiously motivated and the subsequent crime of attempting to save the victim or speaking against the radical elements ends up inviting a violent attack, it would also be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime under this category. This case carried clear religious hostility because the violence was directed at Hindus who objected to Bakrid-related sacrifice preparations and animal housing inside a shared residential society. The Hindu residents were not interfering with anyone’s private religious beliefs. They asserted that common social spaces and housing rules applied equally to all residents. However, the moment Hindus opposed the illegal shed and qurbani-related arrangements, they were met with mob violence and blade attacks. The incident reflected a deeper mindset of religious supremacy. Hindu residents objected to the conversion of common residential premises into a space for qurbani preparations and demanded that society rules be followed equally by all. Instead of resolving the issue through lawful or civil means, Muslim residents responded with intimidation and violence. This reflected an attitude that Hindu objections and sensitivities did not deserve equal consideration and that Hindus resisting such religious assertions could be silenced through force. Another important aspect was the disregard shown towards Hindu religious sensitivities. Qurbani and animal sacrifice are deeply sensitive issues for many Hindus, particularly inside shared residential spaces. Yet when Hindus raised concerns, the response was not accommodation or dialogue but aggression and communal intimidation. The violence sent a broader message that Hindus in such localities could face retaliation for asserting their rights or opposing practices they found offensive within common civic spaces. Taken together, the mob assault, the blade attack on Hindu residents, the attempt to forcibly continue qurbani-related arrangements despite objections, and the atmosphere of intimidation established the religiously aggravating nature of the incident. The conduct reflected hostility towards Hindus, asserting equal rights over shared residential spaces, and demonstrated how violence was used to enforce communal dominance and suppress Hindu resistance.
