Case Summary

Hindu religious identity and Hindu civilisational tradition were subjected to sustained public denigration on national television on 12 May 2026 when Hareesh Mohamed Ibrahim, a DMK-aligned political analyst, appeared on NDTV's The Buck Stops Here to defend Udhayanidhi Stalin's Assembly statement calling for the eradication of Sanatana Dharma. Over approximately seven minutes, Ibrahim repeatedly characterised Sanatana Dharma as equivalent to caste hierarchy and Varnashrama Dharma, made unsourced claims about Hindu tradition, deflected every demand for textual evidence, and invoked the concept of Brahmanical patriarchy to silence a Hindu woman anchor who asked him to cite a single source for his claims. As per the details, anchor Padmaja Joshi asked Ibrahim directly why Udhayanidhi Stalin had chosen to repeat his call to eradicate Sanatana Dharma during his debut speech as Leader of the Opposition. Ibrahim responded by claiming that Sanatana Dharma represented divisiveness with caste hierarchy and Varnashrama Dharma. When Joshi repeatedly asked him to cite any source, text, or authority that explicitly defined Sanatana Dharma as a caste hierarchy, Ibrahim could not provide one. After multiple opportunities to answer the same straightforward question, Ibrahim stated plainly that he could not answer. Rather than acknowledging the absence of an evidential basis for his claims, Ibrahim pivoted to broader social grievances, arguing that Brahmanical patriarchy dominated every institution in India, including the Supreme Court, because its judges disproportionately came from one community that hailed from the head. He then accused Joshi of conducting a one-sided interview and told her she needed to learn how to conduct a debate first. Joshi responded directly: "I will be damned if I take instructions from anyone who makes statements without quoting a single source, is defending a statement asking for the eradication of an entire religion and then decides to play victim by saying we have withstood threats. You are the ones threatening." Throughout the exchange, Joshi pointedly asked whether Udhayanidhi Stalin had ever called for the eradication of any other religion because of hierarchies or discrimination within it. Ibrahim could not provide a single example. The debate concluded without Ibrahim answering the central question or providing a single source for his claims about Sanatana Dharma.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

The primary category for this case is "Hate speech against Hindus". The sub-category here is "Anti-Hindu slurs, mocking faith". Anti-Hindu slurs and the deliberate mocking of the Hindu faith owing to religious animosity involve the usage of derogatory terms, stereotypes, or offensive references to religious practices, symbols, or figures. One of the common anti-Hindu slurs used against Hindus is “cow-worshipper” and “cow piss drinker”. The intention of using this term is to demean and mock Hindus as a group and their religious beliefs since Hindus consider the cow holy. Additionally, some symbols and the slurs attached to them have a historical context that exacerbates the insult, hate, stereotyping, dehumanisation and oppression against Hindus. Cow worship has been used for centuries to denigrate Hindus, insult their faith and oppress Hindus specifically as a religious group. There has been overwhelming documentation about how cow slaughter has been used to persecute Hindus with cow meat being thrown in temples and places of worship. There has also been overwhelming documentation where cow meat (beef) has been force-fed to Hindus to either forcefully convert them to Islam or denigrate their faith. Apart from cow worship, the Swastika – which holds deep religious significance for the Hindus – has also been misinterpreted and distorted to use as a slur against Hindus. Similarly, the worship of the Shivling has been used by supremacist ideologies and religions to denigrate Hindus owing to religious animosity. Such slurs and denigration stem out of inherent animosity and hate towards Hindus and their faith, therefore, it is categorised as hate speech targeted at Hindus specifically owing to their religious identity. Hareesh Mohamed Ibrahim came to the NDTV debate with a single task: defend Udhayanidhi Stalin's call to eradicate Sanatana Dharma. He failed on the most basic intellectual level. When asked to cite one source, one text, one authority that defined Sanatana Dharma as caste hierarchy, he could not. After multiple attempts and multiple opportunities, he stated plainly that he could not answer. This is not a minor evidential gap. It is the collapse of the entire intellectual foundation of the DMK's position. The call to eradicate Sanatana Dharma rests on the claim that Sanatana Dharma is equivalent to caste oppression. Ibrahim could not establish that claim with a single citation. The subversion of Hindu scripture in this case was not conducted through quotation or textual analysis. It was conducted through assertion. Ibrahim repeatedly characterised Sanatana Dharma as Varnashrama Dharma and caste hierarchy without providing any textual basis for this equivalence. This methodology, in which Hindu tradition is defined by its critics rather than by its own texts, is a documented strategy of delegitimisation. By asserting without evidence that Sanatana Dharma is nothing more than caste oppression, Ibrahim sought to strip a civilisational faith tradition followed by hundreds of millions of Hindus of its spiritual, philosophical, and devotional content, reducing it to a social evil deserving eradication. The absence of sources was not an oversight. It was the methodology. The invocation of Brahmanical patriarchy to deflect Padmaja Joshi's demand for sources reveals the function of this rhetoric within the DMK ecosystem. When Ibrahim ran out of road on the evidential question, he did not concede the point. He reframed the anchor's demand for evidence as an expression of the very oppression he was describing. A Hindu woman asking for a source citation was recast as an instrument of Brahmanical patriarchy. This is a rhetorical strategy designed to make the demand for evidence itself appear as an act of Hindu supremacy, insulating the anti-Hindu argument from accountability by framing accountability as oppression. The irony noted by Joshi was precise: a male political panellist refusing to answer basic questions positioned himself as the victim of a Hindu woman anchor who was asking them. Ibrahim's NDTV appearance did not occur in isolation. It was a direct defence of Udhayanidhi Stalin's 12 May 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly statement calling for the eradication of Sanatana Dharma, itself a deliberate repetition of Stalin's 2023 Sanatana Abolition Conference speech in which he compared Sanatana Dharma to mosquitoes, dengue, malaria, and coronavirus and called for its complete eradication. The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court ruled in January 2026 that those 2023 remarks amounted to hate speech against the Hindu community. Udhayanidhi Stalin repeated the call to eradicate Sanatana Dharma on the floor of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on 12 May 2026, less than four months after that judicial ruling. Ibrahim then appeared on national television the same evening to defend the repetition. The sequence establishes that the eradication rhetoric was not a lapse in judgment or an impulsive remark. It was a deliberate and sustained ideological position maintained by the DMK ecosystem even after judicial censure, and actively promoted on national platforms by DMK-aligned commentators. The selective application of the eradication rhetoric is the most significant pattern marker in this exchange. Joshi asked directly whether Udhayanidhi Stalin had ever called for the eradication of any other religion because of hierarchies or discrimination within it. Ibrahim could not provide a single example. The DMK's call to eradicate Sanatana Dharma is not applied to any other religion. It is applied exclusively to Hinduism. This selectivity establishes that the rhetoric is not a principled opposition to religious hierarchy in general but a targeted campaign against Hindu religious identity specifically, one that has now been maintained across multiple public platforms, multiple occasions, and multiple years despite a High Court ruling characterising it as hate speech. Given that this case met the parameters of a religiously motivated hate crime, Ibrahim's conduct reflected more than political commentary or social criticism. By defending a call to eradicate Sanatana Dharma on national television without producing a single evidential basis for the characterisation of it as caste hierarchy, invoking Brahmanical patriarchy to silence a Hindu woman anchor's demand for accountability, and doing so as part of a documented pattern of DMK ecosystem anti-Hindu rhetoric that had already been ruled hate speech by the Madras High Court, his actions demonstrated a deliberate and public campaign of anti-Hindu denigration conducted under the cover of progressive social discourse. Hindu religious tradition was targeted specifically because its civilisational identity made it the focal point of the ideological hostility that Ibrahim and the DMK ecosystem he represents share. This reflects an underlying hostility toward Hindu religious identity that cannot be characterised as anything other than religiously motivated. Given that this case met the parameters of a religiously motivated hate crime, it was added to the hate crime database of the tracker.
