Case Summary

A 20 year old Hindu woman from Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, was sexually exploited after a Muslim man concealed his religious identity and introduced himself to her as a Hindu man named Raju. The Hindu woman was drawn into a relationship through false promises of marriage and later discovered that the man’s real identity was Aamir. After learning that he was Muslim, she distanced herself from him, following which he began blackmailing and assaulting her while pressuring her to convert to Islam and marry him. The incident took place in the Chinhat area of Lucknow. Aamir, a married Muslim man named Aamir, approached the Hindu woman while posing as “Raju”. To strengthen the false Hindu identity, he wore a sacred thread on his hand and applied a tilak on his forehead. The Hindu woman believed he was Hindu and entered into a relationship with him after he promised to marry her. During the relationship, Aamir sexually exploited the Hindu woman under the pretext of marriage. He also secretly recorded obscene videos and photographs of her without her knowledge. The Hindu woman later discovered that the man identifying himself as Raju was in fact a Muslim man named Aamir. Following this discovery, she distanced herself from him and attempted to end contact. After the Hindu woman withdrew from the relationship, Aamir began threatening her with the obscene videos and photographs he had secretly recorded. He warned her that he would make the material viral if she refused to comply with his demands. He continued blackmailing her and pressured her to continue sexual relations with him. During this period, he also demanded that the Hindu woman convert to Islam and marry him. She refused to convert. On 10th May 2026, Aamir called the Hindu woman to his house in Chinhat, Lucknow, telling her that he would delete the obscene videos and photographs he had recorded of her. He demanded 25,000 rupees from the Hindu woman in exchange for deleting the material. After she paid the money, she told him to permanently remove the videos and photographs. Instead, Aamir assaulted the Hindu woman inside the house. Hearing the commotion, Aamir’s family members entered the room. His mother, father, brother and sister joined him in assaulting the Hindu woman. She sustained serious injuries during the attack. The Hindu woman later managed to escape from the house and reached the Takrohi police outpost under Chinhat police station. The Hindu woman informed the police about the sexual exploitation, blackmail, coercion to convert to Islam, extortion, assault and the obscene recordings made by Aamir. Despite narrating the entire sequence of events, no immediate action was taken at the outpost and she was turned away without registration of her complaint. The Hindu woman later approached Deputy Commissioner of Police East Diksha Sharma and informed her about the incident. Following this intervention, the Chinhat police were directed to register a First Information Report in the matter. Police proceedings were initiated against Aamir in connection with the sexual exploitation, blackmail, assault, extortion and coercion faced by the Hindu woman. The investigation into the incident remained ongoing.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category - Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. Within this, the subcategory selected is - Man pretends to be Hindu. Under this, the tertiary categories selected are - Name changed, and Wears symbols of Hinduism. When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. The other sub-category selected for this case is - Brainwashed and/ or groomed. Under this, the tertiary categories selected are - Rape and sexual assault/harassment, and Victim says she was brainwashed/groomed. In our database, we have not added incidents where women have converted to another religion of their free will and no allegations of forced/involuntary conversion have been made. However, there are certain cases of conversion where the consent itself is a result of the brainwashing or grooming of a minor by the non-Hindu perpetrator trying to victimise a woman for her Hindu religious identity. The phenomenon of grooming points to non-Hindu perpetrators identifying their Hindu victims’ vulnerabilities and exploiting them over months and sometimes years, to extract the supposed ‘consent’ in order to convert their religion. In most cases of grooming, the victims are minors or the grooming started when the victim was a minor. In other cases of grooming, the non-Hindu perpetrator brainwashes and grooms a minor victim to extract their trust and then proceeds to rape them repeatedly with the intent of converting them to their faith. It is pertinent to understand here that when the victim is a minor, the ‘consent’ to convert or enter into a romantic relationship with an adult itself is redundant – addressed by POCSO. While every case of conversion of a minor and incidents of establishing a physical relationship with a minor by an adult is a crime, for the purpose of this database, a case would be considered a hate crime only if there is a distinct religious angle to the grooming. For example, in the UK, if a Hindu minor is targeted by Pakistani grooming gangs, it would be considered a hate crime because the victims are specifically targeted owing to their non-Muslim religious identity with the perpetrators being Muslim. In other cases, if a Hindu minor is brainwashed into entering a physical relationship with the non-Hindu adult perpetrator and the family alleges grooming/brainwashing of the minor to convert her religion, it would form a part of this database. If the victim is a Hindu adult, the case would form a part of this database only if the victim herself says that she was brainwashed/groomed to convert her religion. However, if the victim is deceased (murdered or otherwise), the case would form a part of this database if her family/friends provided testimony that the victim was brainwashed/groomed to convert her religion. Since these crimes have a distinct religious angle where the victim is being targeted owing to her Hindu religious identity, these cases are considered a hate crime. Another sub-category selected for this case is - Forced conversion before marriage. In such cases, a non-Hindu man is in a relationship with a Hindu woman when the pressure to convert her religion begins to manifest. In such cases, typically, two patterns emerge. First, when the relationship is consensual, and the religious identity of the perpetrator is known to the Hindu woman in the relationship, however, at some point during the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts to force the victim to convert her religion and give up her Hindu religious identity. The second is when the woman gets into a marriage with the man pretending to share her faith. Later, when the truth is revealed, the man starts pressuring the woman to convert her religion and give up her religious identity. In both the situations, the methods used to force the victim to convert her religion often revolve around force-feeding beef, forcing her to wear hijab, forcing her to read the Kalma or even pressurizing the victim to do ‘Nikah’, which is marriage under Islamic law, with a prerequisite being conversion to Islam. Cases where a Hindu woman consensually converts to Islam in a relationship will be left out of the hate crime database, even though it could be argued in several cases that the conversion was a result of religious brainwashing. Another sub-category selected for this case is - Assault or threat upon refusal to convert. When Hindu women are in a relationship with non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman faces threats or assault after she refuses to convert and change her religious identity owing to pressure/force by the non-Hindu man. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim. Somewhere along the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts pressurizing the Hindu woman to convert to Islam and upon her refusal, assaults or threatens the victim. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. Cases where the Hindu woman converts to Islam and does not file a complaint about the force or threat, are not considered a part of the hate tracker, even though, it may be argued that the woman was brainwashed or threatened to convert to Islam. This case has been added to the tracker as Muslim perpetrator, Aamir, deliberately concealed his religious identity in order to target the Hindu woman. He introduced himself to her using the Hindu name “Raju” instead of his real Muslim name. This was not a random nickname or casual deception. It was a calculated attempt to present himself as a Hindu man so that the Hindu woman would trust him and feel culturally and religiously safe around him. He understood that presenting himself openly as a Muslim man could have affected the Hindu woman’s willingness to enter into a relationship with him. He therefore chose to erase his Muslim identity and construct a false Hindu identity specifically to gain access to the Hindu woman emotionally and physically. His decision to hide his real identity demonstrated deliberate targeting rooted in the victim’s Hindu identity. The deception worked only because the victim was Hindu and because he intentionally exploited Hindu religious familiarity to lower her guard. The religious motivation became even clearer through Aamir’s deliberate use of visible Hindu religious symbols. He wore a sacred thread on his hand and applied a tilak on his forehead while presenting himself as “Raju”. Both symbols hold clear religious and cultural significance within Hindu traditions and are commonly associated with Hindu identity and religious practice. Aamir consciously used these markers to reinforce the false impression that he belonged to the same religious community as the Hindu woman. This was not incidental behaviour. He intentionally selected outward symbols of Hinduism because he knew they would create trust and familiarity for a Hindu woman. He weaponised sacred Hindu symbols as tools of deception in order to emotionally manipulate and sexually exploit the victim. The use of these symbols showed planning, preparation and conscious religious targeting. His actions demonstrated that he specifically exploited Hindu religious identity as a gateway to access and control the Hindu woman. The Hindu woman was systematically groomed and manipulated throughout the relationship through a prolonged pattern of deception and emotional control. Aamir built the entire relationship on a fabricated Hindu identity and a false promise of marriage. He created emotional dependency while concealing his real religious identity and marital status from the Hindu woman. This manipulation was not limited to personal dishonesty. It was rooted in calculated religious impersonation designed to emotionally trap a Hindu woman who believed she was in a relationship with a Hindu man. By maintaining the false identity over time, he ensured that the Hindu woman remained emotionally invested before revealing his real identity and escalating the coercion. The grooming process demonstrated intent to psychologically weaken the Hindu woman and isolate her into continued compliance. His actions showed a deliberate strategy to exploit the victim’s trust as a Hindu woman in order to gain sexual access, emotional control and leverage over her. The sexual exploitation of the Hindu woman took place under the false promise of marriage after Aamir had already established a fake Hindu identity for himself. The Hindu woman consented to the relationship believing she was with a Hindu man named Raju who intended to marry her. This consent was obtained through sustained deception about his religion, identity and intentions. Aamir sexually exploited the Hindu woman while secretly recording obscene videos and photographs of her without her knowledge. The recordings later became instruments of coercion and intimidation. His conduct demonstrated that the relationship itself had been constructed as a mechanism of exploitation from the beginning. The deliberate concealment of his Muslim identity while extracting sexual access from a Hindu woman showed targeted exploitation tied directly to her religious identity. He manipulated the social and emotional expectations attached to marriage within Hindu society in order to exploit and control her. The Hindu woman’s experience of grooming and coercion became further evident in the manner in which she sought help after escaping the abuse. After being assaulted and threatened, she approached the Takrohi police outpost and narrated the entire sequence of exploitation, blackmail, coercion and violence she had endured. Despite the seriousness of the offences, she was turned away without immediate action being taken on her complaint. The Hindu woman was therefore left without institutional protection immediately after escaping sustained manipulation and violence. Her repeated attempts to seek intervention reflected the extent of the psychological pressure and coercive control she had experienced throughout the relationship. The fact that she continued pursuing legal action despite blackmail, threats and assault showed the prolonged and deeply exploitative nature of the grooming she had endured at the hands of Aamir. The religious nature of the targeting became explicit after the Hindu woman discovered Aamir’s real Muslim identity and attempted to distance herself from him. At this stage, Aamir demanded that she convert to Islam and marry him. This demand transformed the deception and exploitation into overt religious coercion. He no longer merely concealed his identity. Instead, he attempted to force the Hindu woman to abandon her own religion and accept his faith as a condition for continuing the relationship. This demand carried deep religious significance because conversion involved the abandonment of the Hindu woman’s existing religious identity, beliefs and cultural background. Aamir specifically escalated the pressure after she discovered that he was Muslim and attempted to leave him. This showed that the demand for conversion was directly linked to her refusal to continue the relationship once his real identity became known. His actions demonstrated a deliberate attempt to use emotional dependency, sexual exploitation and blackmail to pressure a Hindu woman into religious conversion and marriage. The coercion was therefore not incidental to the abuse but central to it. The threats and violence intensified after the Hindu woman refused to convert to Islam and refused to marry Aamir. He began threatening her with the obscene videos and photographs he had secretly recorded during the relationship. These recordings were used as tools of intimidation to force compliance with his demands. He understood that releasing such material could cause severe social humiliation and psychological trauma to the Hindu woman. He deliberately weaponised this fear in order to break her resistance and pressure her into conversion and continued submission. The threats were directly tied to her refusal to accept his religious demands, showing that the coercion was specifically intended to punish the Hindu woman for resisting conversion. On 10th May 2026, Aamir called the Hindu woman to his house under the pretext of deleting the obscene material and extorted 25,000 rupees from her. After taking the money, he physically assaulted her inside the house. The violence escalated further when his family members, including his mother, father, brother and sister, joined in assaulting the Hindu woman. The collective assault occurred immediately after she continued resisting his demands and sought the deletion of the material being used to blackmail her. The coordinated violence inside the perpetrator’s home demonstrated that the intimidation and coercion against the Hindu woman extended beyond an individual act and became a collective act of punishment against her refusal to submit. The assault functioned as retaliation against a Hindu woman who refused to accept conversion, marriage and continued exploitation despite sustained pressure and threats. The sequence of deception, religious impersonation, grooming, sexual exploitation, coercion to convert, blackmail and violent retaliation demonstrated a clear pattern of religiously motivated targeting directed at the Hindu woman because of her Hindu identity. Aamir deliberately constructed a false Hindu identity using a Hindu name, sacred thread and tilak in order to gain the trust of the Hindu woman and emotionally integrate himself into her life. Once that trust had been secured, he exploited the relationship to sexually abuse, manipulate and control her. When the Hindu woman discovered his real identity and attempted to leave, the coercion shifted into explicit religious pressure to convert to Islam and marry him. Her refusal triggered blackmail, extortion and physical violence. Each stage of the abuse reflected deliberate choices designed to exploit the Hindu woman’s religious identity, emotional vulnerability and social fears in ways specifically tied to her being Hindu. This incident is not an isolated case but part of a broader pattern where Hindu women are deliberately targeted through deception and emotional blackmail for religious conversion and sexual exploitation. This stems from inherent hostility towards the victim's professed faith since Abrahamic faiths believe that any non-adherent to the faith is subject to being dehumanised till they convert. Such predatory actions stem from doctrinal animosity towards the Hindu faith and its adherents Given that this case met the parameters of a religiously motivated hate crime, it was added to the hate crime database of the tracker. Disclaimer: The exact date of the initial contact between the Hindu woman and the perpetrator was not specified in the available sources. The tracker records incident dates based on when the crime occurred rather than when it was published or reported. Since the precise beginning of the relationship and grooming process remained unclear, 16th May 2026, the publication date of the report, was used as the indicative incident date for documentation purposes only.
