Case Summary

A Hindu woman named Tanu, a resident of Ballabhgarh, was murdered by her Muslim boyfriend, Kamil, a resident of Milak Bakaina village in the Naugawan Sadat area of Uttar Pradesh. Tanu's body was found in Gajraula after Kamil strangled her to death and disposed of the body in his car. Tanu and Kamil had met in 2022 when Kamil had travelled to Ballabhgarh for decoration work. The accused had drawn her into a romantic relationship that developed between them. Tanu was married to a local resident named Sunil and had two children, but she had separated from her husband in 2024 because of her relationship with Kamil and had been living with her parents. Kamil had been visiting her regularly and had promised to marry her. Ten days before the murder, Tanu had visited Kamil in Naugawan Sadat. Following that visit, she had pressed him repeatedly to fulfil his promise to marry her. Kamil, who had begun to withdraw from the marriage commitment, planned the murder in response to that pressure. On 6 May 2026, Kamil travelled to Ballabhgarh and took Tanu back with him to Naugawan Sadat. During the journey, he switched off her mobile phone. When Tanu pressed him again about the marriage, Kamil strangled her to death and disposed of her body by throwing it from his car in Gajraula. Tanu's family had reported her missing to Ballabhgarh Police Station after her mobile went silent. Following the discovery of the body on 7 May 2026 and the post-mortem examination, Tanu's mother filed a complaint against Kamil. A First Information Report was registered against Kamil. Superintendent of Police Lakhan Singh Yadav confirmed the details of the case and stated that Kamil would be arrested and remanded to custody shortly.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been placed in the Undecided database of the Hinduphobia Tracker rather than the Hate Crime database because the religious identities of both the perpetrator and the victim raise serious questions about the motive of the crime. The accused was a Muslim man who had entered into a relationship with a Hindu woman under the pretext of marriage and then killed her when she pressed him to fulfil that promise. That sequence of events creates a plausible suspicion that the victim may have been targeted because of her religious identity, but it does not, on the available evidence, establish religiously motivated intent. There are multiple prior incidents in which Hindu women were lured into intimate relationships by Muslim men, pressured to convert, sexually exploited, promised marriage and then discarded. Those patterns, when they occur, have been driven by animosity towards the woman’s Hindu identity. Given those precedents and the religious identities of the victim and perpetrator involved here, it is possible that a similar dynamic operated in this case: that the victim was lured because she was Hindu, exploited and then killed when she pressed for marriage. That possibility increases the need for careful scrutiny. At the same time, it is equally plausible that this killing was not motivated by religion but arose from a non-religious motive, for example, a relationship that turned violent, opportunistic sexual exploitation, or a dispute over a broken marriage promise. Some may argue that, if the perpetrator’s only intent had been sexual exploitation or to abandon a partner, a Muslim woman would be more easily accessible to him than a Hindu woman. The fact that the victim was Hindu, therefore, adds to, but does not prove, suspicions of religious targeting. There is currently no direct evidence to demonstrate religiously motivated targeting. Neither has the victim's family asserted that she was targeted because of her faith. On that basis, the case will remain in the Undecided database pending further information. If credible evidence emerges indicating that the victim was targeted or killed because of her religious identity, the case will be reassessed and transferred to the Hate Crime database of the Hinduphobia Tracker.
