Case Summary

In Bangladesh's Noakhali district, a Hindu woman from Ward No. 7, Charishwar Union No. 5, Hatia Upazila, fell victim to a brutal late-night assault by unidentified attackers. According to local sources and the victim’s family, the attackers forcibly entered the family’s home at around 3:25 am on 10 May 2026, creating fear and panic within the area. During the attack, the Hindu woman was physically assaulted and tortured by the intruders. The attackers used a knife to cut off her ear and forcibly stole her gold pendant, weighing around five annas. The assailants also looted 10,000 taka in cash from the house before fleeing the scene. The violent assault left the woman severely traumatised and intensified fear among the local Hindu community. The incident quickly spread panic across the locality, with residents expressing concern over the deteriorating security situation. Locals stated that such a brutal attack on a Hindu family in a populated area had created extreme insecurity among Hindus living in the region. They demanded a swift investigation to identify the culprits and ensure strict punishment for those responsible. After receiving news of the incident, the president and leaders of the Hatia Upazila Hindu Parishad rushed to the victim’s home. They met the victim’s family, enquired about their condition, and assured them of their support. The Hindu Parishad leaders strongly condemned the attack and demanded the immediate arrest of those involved, along with exemplary punishment. They also urged the Hatia Upazila administration and law enforcement authorities to take urgent action to restore confidence and security among the local Hindu community. This escalation of violence against Hindus in Bangladesh has unfolded in three distinct phases: first, following the ouster of Sheikh Hasina’s government in August 2024; second, after the death of Sharif Osman Bin Hadi in December 2025; and third, in the immediate aftermath of the 13th National Parliamentary Election 2026. Following the ouster of Sheikh Hasina, multiple reports documented attacks on Hindu homes, temples, and religious institutions, alongside intimidation campaigns, arson, and mob assaults targeting minority neighbourhoods. The Hinduphobia tracker has recorded 336 such incidents against the Hindu minority, underscoring the scale and persistence of anti-Hindu violence during this period. A further escalation occurred following the death of Sharif Osman Bin Hadi, a Muslim political activist and student leader known for his anti-Hindu and anti-India rhetoric. Hadi had been involved in political unrest after the fall of the Hasina government and was killed in Dhaka on 18 December 2025 during clashes. In the aftermath of his death, Hindu communities were blamed and subsequently targeted in retaliatory violence. Hindu homes were selectively set ablaze in multiple localities, forcing families to flee and leaving many displaced. The attacks appeared patterned rather than sporadic, with Muslim mobs focusing on Hindu neighbourhoods, properties, and religious symbols. Among the victims was Dipu Chandra Das, who was lynched to death and his body was set ablaze by a Muslim mob over false blasphemy allegations. The Hinduphobia tracker documented 51 incidents of anti-Hindu violence in the period following Hadi’s death alone. Such incidents underscore the vulnerability of the Hindu minority amid rising communal hostility and the weaponisation of religious accusations. Reports further indicated that posters and written materials calling for the extermination of Hindus were displayed in public spaces, signalling an alarming normalisation of genocidal rhetoric. When combined with acts of arson, vandalism, assault, and targeted intimidation, these developments suggest a coordinated environment of hostility aimed at terrorising the Hindu community and reinforcing majoritarian dominance. The third phase of violence was unleashed after the 13th National Parliamentary Election 2026. Within days of the announcement of results, Hindu families in districts such as Noakhali, Rangpur, Nilphamari, Sylhet, Thakurgaon, and Dinajpur reported coordinated attacks involving arson, looting, assault, and vandalism of temples and homes. In several instances, Hindu homes were selectively targeted, looted, and families were threatened with displacement.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been categorised under the ‘Undecided’ database in the Hinduphobia Tracker, as there is currently no conclusive evidence establishing that the attack was religiously motivated in nature. The incident took place in Noakhali, Bangladesh, during a period marked by heightened insecurity and vulnerability for the Hindu minority community. Following the ousting of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on 5 August 2024, the death of anti-Hindu and anti-India political activist Osman Hadi in December 2025, and the 13th National Parliamentary elections held in February 2026, Bangladesh witnessed a significant rise in communal tensions and political unrest. During this period, several incidents involving attacks on Hindu homes and temples, physical assaults, sexual violence, looting, land grabbing, intimidation, and the displacement of Hindu families were reported from different parts of the country, contributing to a widespread climate of fear and insecurity among Hindus. In this particular case, a Hindu family was violently attacked inside their home during the early hours of the morning. During the assault, a Hindu woman was physically tortured, her ear was severed with a knife, and cash, along with gold ornaments, was looted from the house. The brutality of the attack caused panic and fear within the local Hindu community, especially given the broader backdrop of recurring violence and insecurity faced by Hindus in Bangladesh. Considering the prevailing atmosphere of hostility and the repeated targeting of Hindus in the country, the fact that the victims belonged to the Hindu community naturally raises suspicion regarding the possibility of a religious motive behind the attack. In a Muslim-majority country where Hindus have repeatedly faced communal violence, intimidation, and targeted attacks, incidents involving extreme violence against Hindu families cannot be viewed in isolation from the wider socio-political context. At the same time, based on the details currently available, it remains equally plausible that the primary motive behind the attack was robbery and violent theft. Reports indicate that the perpetrators looted cash and gold ornaments from the house, suggesting a financial motive behind the crime. Furthermore, no explicit religious slurs, anti-Hindu threats, references to the victims’ faith, temple targeting, forced conversion attempts, or other clear indicators of anti-Hindu hostility have yet emerged in connection with the incident. Therefore, while the broader pattern of anti-Hindu violence in Bangladesh provides important contextual background and raises legitimate concerns regarding the safety of the Hindu minority community, the presently available evidence is insufficient to conclusively establish that this specific attack was religiously motivated. In the absence of definitive evidence demonstrating anti-Hindu intent, the case will currently remain in the Undecided database. If further information emerges indicating that the attack was motivated by hostility towards the victims’ Hindu identity, the case will be reassessed and may subsequently be added to the hate crime database of the tracker.
