Case Summary

Hindu fish seller Krishno Rajbongshi was found dead in Manikganj, Dhaka Division, Bangladesh, after being detained and brutally beaten by members of a local market management committee over accusations of fish theft. The Hindu victim was kept inside the committee office for hours before his body was later recovered hanging inside the premises. The incident triggered outrage among local Hindus and residents after details emerged regarding his detention, assault, and death inside the committee office. The Hindu victim, Krishno Rajbongshi, aged 35, belonged to the Bandutia Majhipara area in Manikganj Sadar Upazila. He earned his livelihood through fish related work and came from an economically vulnerable background. On 6th May 2026, Krishno Rajbongshi and another individual were detained by members of the Tara Fish Market management committee on accusations of stealing fish from the market area in Sadar Upazila. According to local accounts and police statements, both men were initially taken into custody by members of the market management committee. However, the second detainee was later released into the custody of his guardians, while the Hindu victim, Krishno Rajbongshi, remained confined inside the committee office. The detention took place under the supervision of market management committee members connected to committee president Md Ibrahim. During the detention, the Hindu victim was subjected to physical assault inside the committee office. Local accounts stated that Krishno Rajbongshi was beaten after being accused of fish theft. The assault took place while he remained confined inside the office premises and separated from his family or community members. The Hindu victim remained in detention inside the office from the morning hours onward. Sometime between the morning and noon hours on 6th May 2026, Krishno Rajbongshi died inside the committee office. His body was later found hanging from a ceiling fan with a towel wrapped around his neck. Local residents stated that committee members opened the locked office room during the afternoon and discovered the Hindu victim hanging inside the room. After discovering the body, committee members attempted to remove Krishno Rajbongshi from the office premises while stating that he would be taken to a hospital. Local residents intervened and stopped the removal of the body. Following resistance from local people, the committee members left the scene. Police later arrived after receiving information regarding the death and recovered the body from the committee office premises. The incident drew further attention after details emerged that the Hindu victim had been detained and beaten exclusively by committee members before his death. Local reports identified market management committee president Md Ibrahim as the individual under whose authority the Hindu victim remained detained inside the office after the release of the second detainee. The Hindu victim’s prolonged confinement, assault, and subsequent death inside the committee office intensified concern among local residents regarding the treatment he received while in custody. The body of Krishno Rajbongshi was sent to the Manikganj Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy following recovery from the scene. Sadar Police Station officer in charge Ikram Hossain stated that the market management committee did not possess authority to unlawfully detain individuals on suspicion of theft and that the matter was under investigation. Police confirmed that the Hindu victim had been detained inside the office premises before his death. The incident remained under investigation following the recovery of the body.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category - Attack resulting in death. Within this, the subcategory selected for this case is - Attacked for Hindu identity. In several cases, Hindus are attacked merely for their Hindu identity without any perceived provocation. A classic example of this category of religiously motivated hate crime is a murder in 2016. 7 ISIS terrorists were convicted for shooting a school principal in Kanpur because they got ‘triggered’ seeing the Kalava on his wrist and tilak that he had put. In this, the Hindu victim had offered no provocation except for his Hindu religious identity. The motivation for the murder was purely religious, driven by religious supremacy. Such cases where Hindus are targeted merely for their religious identity would be documented as a hate crime. Under this category, cases where the attack led to the death of the Hindu victim/s would be documented. Here, a Hindu fish seller was unlawfully detained, brutally beaten, and later found dead inside the office of a market management committee after being accused of fish theft. While the available details do not explicitly indicate a religious motive, the broader context cannot be ignored. When there is an ongoing ethnic cleansing based on religious identity, every crime in and of itself is assumed to be motivated by the same religious animosity, even if there is a lack of a specific religious marker in the immediate crime. During an ongoing ethnic cleansing, the dehumanisation of people based on their religious identity and the normalisation of religious hostility drive the crimes committed against them, even when there is a lack of stated religious motive. For the purpose of documenting the 2024 ethnic cleansing of Hindus in Bangladesh, the Hinduphobia Tracker is assuming religious motivation ab initio. If a case is specifically and beyond a reasonable doubt proven to be driven by motivations other than religious hostility, it will post-facto be removed from the hate crime database.
