Case Summary

In Rampur Bushahar of Shimla district, Himachal Pradesh, religious sentiments were hurt after a local businessman posted abusive remarks on social media targeting the cow and Lord Nandi, both of which hold deep significance in Hinduism. The incident occurred in the backdrop of a nationwide campaign advocating for granting the cow the status of “Mother of the Nation.” During this time, members of the Hindu organisation submitted a memorandum to the President through the Sub-Divisional Magistrate in which they stated that a local businessman had used abusive language regarding the cow and Lord Nandi on social media, thereby hurting religious sentiments. Following the controversial comment, a delegation of Hindu organisations met SDM Harsh Amarendra Singh and submitted a fresh memorandum demanding strict legal action against the accused. The delegation emphasised that the cow is revered in Hindu culture and that its protection is regarded as a sacred duty, while Nandi is venerated as the devoted vehicle of Lord Shiva, making such remarks deeply offensive and capable of disturbing communal harmony. The Hindu organisations expressed strong resentment and warned that failure to act could embolden similar incidents. Subsequently, a formal complaint was also lodged at the local police station. Several members, including Vinay Sharma of the Satyanarayan Temple Trust, along with Tilak Raj, Vishnu Sharma, Raghav Soni, Anoop Sharma, Sangram Singh, and Vasu Mittal, were present during the submission of the memorandum and the filing of the complaint.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category- Hate Speech against Hindus. The subcategory selected is- Anti-Hindu slurs, mocking faith. Anti-Hindu slurs and the deliberate mocking of the Hindu faith owing to religious animosity involve the usage of derogatory terms, stereotypes, or offensive references to religious practices, symbols, or figures. One of the common anti-Hindu slurs used against Hindus is “cow-worshipper” and “cow piss drinker”. The intention of using this term is to demean and mock Hindus as a group and their religious beliefs since Hindus consider the cow holy. Additionally, some symbols and the slurs attached to them have a historical context that exacerbates the insult, hate, stereotyping, dehumanisation and oppression against Hindus. Cow worship has been used for centuries to denigrate Hindus, insult their faith and oppress Hindus specifically as a religious group. There has been overwhelming documentation about how cow slaughter has been used to persecute Hindus with cow meat being thrown in temples and places of worship. There has also been overwhelming documentation where cow meat (beef) has been force-fed to Hindus to either forcefully convert them to Islam or denigrate their faith. Apart from cow worship, the Swastika – which holds deep religious significance for the Hindus – has also been misinterpreted and distorted to use as a slur against Hindus. Similarly, the worship of the Shivling has been used by supremacist ideologies and religions to denigrate Hindus owing to religious animosity. Such slurs and denigration stem out of inherent animosity and hate towards Hindus and their faith, therefore, it is categorised as hate speech targeted at Hindus specifically owing to their religious identity. This case was included in the hate crime database as a local businessman posted derogatory remarks on social media targeting the cow and Nandi, both of which are deeply revered in Hinduism. In Hinduism, the cow holds an exceptionally sacred status and is venerated as a symbol of life, sustenance, and motherhood, often referred to as “Gau Mata.” Its protection and service are considered a moral and dharmic duty, embedded in religious traditions and cultural ethos. Similarly, Nandi, the sacred bull, is worshipped as the devoted vehicle and gatekeeper of Lord Shiva, occupying a central place in temple worship and spiritual symbolism. Any insult directed at these revered figures is therefore perceived not merely as offensive speech but as a direct affront to the religious identity and beliefs of Hindus. These remarks amounted to an intentional insult to core elements of the Hindu faith and reflected clear religious hostility towards Hindu beliefs and practices. By publicly using offensive language against sacred symbols, the accused not only disrespected the religious sentiments of Hindus but also contributed to an atmosphere of provocation and disharmony. The nature of the act, carried out on a public platform, indicated that it was not an inadvertent expression but a deliberate attempt to demean Hindu religious values and normalise contempt against the Hindu community. The incident also formed part of a wider and increasingly visible trend wherein social media platforms are being used to circulate derogatory and inflammatory content targeting Hindu deities, symbols, and practices. Such acts contribute to the normalisation of anti-Hindu sentiment in digital spaces, fostering an environment in which mockery and vilification of the faith are trivialised or encouraged. The public nature of such expressions not only intensifies their impact but also risks provoking unrest by hurting religious sentiments on a broader scale. In this instance, the targeting of deeply venerated figures and symbols, combined with the deliberate use of offensive language in a public forum, firmly established the act as a religiously motivated hate crime. Therefore, this case has been added to the hate crime database of the Hinduphobia Tracker.
