Hindu girls lured with gifts, misled and harassed by Muslim youths posing as Hindus in Dehradun, Uttarakhand
Case Summary
In Dehradun, Uttarakhand, two young Hindu girls from Pauri and Tehri Garhwal were misled, deceived and harassed by four Muslim youths in Paltan Bazaar. The accused concealed their religious identity by using Hindu names and invited the girls to a restaurant on the pretext of a birthday celebration. On the night of the incident, the two Hindu girls were lured on the pretext of a birthday to a restaurant by four Muslim youths. During the gathering, the accused applied cake on the girls’ faces and proceeded to engage in inappropriate behaviour with them. Families seated nearby objected to the conduct and informed Bajrang Dal member Vikas Verma. Upon receiving the information, Bajrang Dal workers reached the location and questioned the youths. Initially, the accused identified themselves with Hindu names such as “Saurabh” and “Ramesh.” Suspicion arose, following which the police were informed. On verification, it was revealed that all four accused were Muslims who had used false identities to interact with the girls. The police took all four into custody.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The primary category for this case is "Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes". The sub-category for this case is "Man pretends to be Hindu". The tertiary categories for this case are "Name changed" and "Pattern for targeting Hindus". When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malicious intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. At the outset, the manner in which the accused approached the Hindu girls formed the core trigger. The interaction was initiated through deception, where the Muslim youths concealed their religious identity and presented themselves with Hindu names. This was not a trivial misrepresentation. It was the very foundation upon which access to the victims was gained. The young Hindu girls living away from home for education were approached through familiar social cues such as birthday celebrations, gifts, and friendly interaction, methods that specifically target trust and emotional openness in young minds. The use of Hindu names assumes greater significance when examined closely. If the intent behind the interaction had been genuine, there would have been no need to conceal identity at the very first stage. The deliberate masking of religious identity indicates that the accused were aware that revealing their true identity could deter the victims. This act of concealment, therefore, was not incidental but a calculated step to lower the guard of the Hindu girls and draw them into a situation they may not have otherwise consented to. The deception itself becomes evidence of underlying intent. Further, the conduct did not remain limited to mere interaction. Once the victims were lured into the setting under the pretext of a birthday gathering, the behaviour escalated into inappropriate physical acts. This progression, from deception to physical misconduct, demonstrates that the initial outreach was not benign. It was a premeditated effort where false identity was used as an entry point, followed by actions that violated the dignity and autonomy of the victims. The pattern suggests that the objective was not companionship but exploitation under false pretences. Taken together, these incidents revealed a recurring pattern where Hindu girls were specifically identified, approached through concealed identity, and drawn into vulnerable situations using emotional and social pretexts. The consistent use of false Hindu identities, combined with subsequent acts of misconduct, indicated that the victims were not randomly chosen but targeted with a clear understanding of their religious identity. Such actions cannot be viewed in isolation as mere personal misconduct. They reflect a structured pattern of targeting, deception, and exploitation directed at Hindu women. The only plausible intent behind such acts is disregard for the victim's faith, thereby bringing the case within the scope of a religiously motivated offence.
