Case Summary

In Brijpuri, located in the Dayalpur Police Station area of North East Delhi, a sacred Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Krishna and Goddess Radha was targeted for defilement by a Muslim man named Fahim. According to media reports, the accused tied a urine-filled condom on the gates of the temple. The condom was placed between decorative flower garlands (malas) used to worship deities. This incident came to light when a few Hindu devotees noticed the urine-filled condom first. They filmed a video of this and posted it on social media. As this video went viral on 15 April 2026 on various social media platforms, it caused outrage among Hindu users. Hindu users called it a disrespect to their faith and a desecration of their temple. They also called for strict legal action against the culprit. Initially, the police authorities had not made any statements about this incident or taken any action. This incident triggered outrage and demands from the local Hindu residents to take action against the culprits and punish them as per the law. Notably, the Hinduphobia Tracker team tried to contact the Dayalpur police to get more information about this case, but the police did not receive our call. Following this, news emerged that a Muslim man, Fahim, was arrested by the police in this case. CCTV footage of the incident was also circulating on social media. In the video, Fahim, with his face covered, arrived at the temple in the dark of night and hung a condom filled with urine at the main entrance. After the video went viral, the police took cognisance of the matter. They immediately registered a First Information Report and arrested the accused. The roles of other individuals in this crime were also being investigated.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case is being added to the tracker under the primary category- Attack on Hindu religious representations. The subcategory selected is- Desecration of Hindu religious symbol. Icons and symbols or a religious representation of a spiritual ideal are widely revered in Hinduism. Iconography is of vital significance in the Hindu milieu. It helps connect people’s spiritual beliefs with the real world. Iconography within the Hindu faith takes several shapes and forms. Murtis are of most significance to Hindus, to which daily rituals, prayers and offerings are done. Besides the murtis, there are several other symbols which have deep significance in the Hindu faith – the Om and Swastika for example. Since these Hindu religious symbols hold paramount importance in Hinduism, any desecration of symbols, icons, murtis, religious representations and manifestations, is driven by animosity towards the faith itself which manifests itself through these murtis, icons and symbols. Therefore, any desecration of these Hindu religious symbols and representations is considered religiously motivated hate crimes under this category. The other subcategory selected is- Attack on Temples. In Hinduism, a temple is the abode of the Deity. The Deity in the Temple is consecrated, thereby, making it a real, breathing entity. Hindus believe that not just the Deity but the temple premises itself are sacred to Hindus since Hindus hold the faith that the entire Temple space is an amalgamation of the divine energy of the deity. Given the central significance of Temples in Hindu Dharma, any attack against a Hindu Temple or its peripheral premises is an attack on the faith itself and is born out of animosity towards the faith, of which, the Temple is a central tenet. Any manner of attack against a Temple and/or its premises would therefore be considered a religiously motivated hate crime. The other subcategory selected is- Defiling religious customs. Sanatan Dharma is not a religion of one book, which is to say that while it has religious scriptures that form the central tenets of the faith, there are several traditions followed through thousands of years, mostly passed from generation to generation orally. There are several such customs and traditions that are followed by various Hindus and Hindu sects. Defiling of these traditions and customs is a breach of an individual or group’s religious practices. Such practices can range from dietary restrictions like not eating non-vegetarian food for a certain period of the year, not eating non-vegetarian food at all, not eating beef since the cow is considered holy in Hinduism, the sanctity of religious customs followed in the house (like many ISCKON devotees), etc. Any malicious action leading to the breach of such traditions or defilement of these traditions owing to animosity towards the faith or for the sake of activism stems not only from the lack of faith in the religion itself but also from disregard for the faith of the devotees who follow the customs/traditions and implicit bias against the faith, the tradition itself. Since these specific traditions are central to the faith of the devotees of that specific sect of Hindus, any non-compliance with these traditional rules would be considered a religiously motivated hate crime. This case stood as a clear example of a crime rooted in anti-Hindu animosity, as the Muslim perpetrator Fahim tied a urine-filled condom at the gate of a Hindu temple. Such acts constituted a clear case of a religiously motivated hate crime aimed at defiling the temple's sanctity and hurting the religious sentiments of the Hindu community. Temples held profound significance for Hindus as revered institutions where divine deities reside; they are considered the abode of the gods. These sacred spaces serve as places of deep religious importance, offering devotees solace, spiritual nourishment, and a connection to the divine through rituals and prayer. Therefore, the act of defiling the sanctity of a temple by tying a condom filled with urine at the gate amounted to clear acts of desecration of the sacred Hindu temple. Hindu temples represented the biggest symbols of Hindu faith and civilisation, so defiling them constitutes an attack on the faith itself and the desecration of sacred Hindu religious symbols, making it a clear case of a religiously motivated hate crime. The deliberate use of urine, considered profoundly impure in Hindu traditions, directly assaulted the core principles of purity central to Hindu worship. By placing this item on the temple gate, the Muslim perpetrator Fahim sought to mock and degrade a sacred space, evoking deep emotional pain among Hindus who viewed such violations as malicious attacks on their faith. This targeted desecration revealed unmistakable intent to intimidate and humiliate the Hindu community, marking it unequivocally as hate-driven aggression. The Muslim perpetrator also carefully placed the condom right between the decorative flower garlands. Flower garlands, known as malas, carry immense sacred significance in Hindu temples; they are offered to deities during worship as symbols of devotion, beauty, and purity, adorning idols to invoke divine blessings and create an atmosphere of reverence. Devotees prepare these garlands with love and ritual purity, viewing them as extensions of their bhakti or loving devotion. The very act of placing the urine-filled condom right between the flower garlands showcased that the Muslim perpetrator Fahim wanted to desecrate even those religious symbols inside the temple used for worshipping deities. This precise placement amplified the insult, turning symbols of purity into vessels of filth and maximising the emotional trauma inflicted on devotees. Such targeted attacks on Hindu temples showcase the depth of Fahim's hostility towards Hinduism and the Hindu community, making it a clear case of a religiously motivated hate crime. The calculated choice of location and materials underscored profound contempt for Hindu rituals and beliefs, far beyond random vandalism. Given that this case meets several parameters of a crime motivated by religious animosity, it is being added to the hate crime database of the Hinduphobia Tracker. Disclaimer: The Hinduphobia Tracker records incident dates based on when the crime occurred rather than when it is reported by the media.
