Why it is Hate Crime ?
This incident has been added to the tracker under the category- Attack on Hindu religious representations. Under this, the first subcategory selected is- Desecration of Hindu religious symbol. Icons and symbols or a religious representation of a spiritual ideal are widely revered in Hinduism. Iconography is of vital significance in the Hindu milieu. It helps connect people’s spiritual beliefs with the real world. Iconography within the Hindu faith takes several shapes and forms. Murtis are of most significance to Hindus, to which daily rituals, prayers and offerings are done. Besides the murtis, there are several other symbols which have deep significance in the Hindu faith – the Om and Swastika for example. Since these Hindu religious symbols hold paramount importance in Hinduism, any desecration of symbols, icons, murtis, religious representations and manifestations, is driven by animosity towards the faith itself which manifests itself through these murtis, icons and symbols. Therefore, any desecration of these Hindu religious symbols and representations is considered religiously motivated hate crimes under this category. The other sub-category selected is - Attack on Temples. In Hinduism, a temple is the abode of the Deity. The Deity in the Temple is consecrated, thereby, making it a real, breathing entity. Hindus believe that not just the Deity but the temple premises itself are sacred to Hindus since Hindus hold the faith that the entire Temple space is an amalgamation of the divine energy of the deity. Given the central significance of Temples in Hindu Dharma, any attack against a Hindu Temple or its peripheral premises is an attack on the faith itself and is born out of animosity towards the faith, of which, the Temple is a central tenet. Any manner of attack against a Temple and/or its premises would therefore be considered a religiously motivated hate crime. This incident qualifies as a religiously motivated hate crime because it involved the targeted desecration of a Hindu place of worship and the deliberate violation of sacred religious symbols in Damdama village, Birbhum district, West Bengal. The perpetrators did not limit their actions to theft; they forcibly entered a temple dedicated to Maa Mansa, a widely revered serpent goddess in Hindu tradition, and proceeded to damage and discard her idol, demonstrating a level of intent that went beyond ordinary criminal activity. The desecration of the idol of Maa Mansa stands as the central religious marker in this case. In Hindu belief, a consecrated idol is not merely symbolic but is regarded as a living embodiment of the deity’s presence. Devotees offer daily prayers and rituals at such sites, forming a deep spiritual bond with the deity consecrated in the temple. A consecrated idol is not a decorative object. It is the living embodiment of divine presence for those who worship at that site. Its deliberate breaking does not merely damage a physical structure. It destroys the sacred heart of the community's devotional life and communicates absolute contempt for the faith of those who revered it. The idol of the Hindu Goddess was broken, desecrated and thrown into a nearby pond, further underscoring the intent to desecrate and insult Hindu religious symbols, reflecting a conscious act of disrespect towards the faith. In Hindu belief, temples and the religious images housed within them are integral to the practice of faith and the expression of devotion. Any act that interferes with or damages these elements is perceived as an attack on the religion itself. By throwing the idol into a pond, the perpetrators further amplified this act of desecration, signalling deliberate disrespect and an intention to degrade an object held in the highest reverence by the community. The temple itself functioned as a sanctified space central to the religious and cultural life of local Hindus. The forced entry into this space, followed by the vandalism within, represented a violation of a protected spiritual environment. Temples in Hinduism are not merely places of gathering but are considered abodes of the divine, where the presence of the deity is invoked and maintained through ritual practices. Any intrusion coupled with destruction within such a space is therefore perceived as an attack on both religious identity and communal dignity. Additionally, the theft of ornaments adorning the idol, when viewed alongside the desecration and disposal of the deity’s image, reinforced that the act was not a simple instance of robbery. The sequence of actions, breaking the idol, discarding it in a water body, and stripping it of its ornaments, demonstrated a pattern of behaviour consistent with intentional desecration. The act of throwing the idol into a pond carried symbolic weight, reflecting an effort to dishonour and degrade the sacred representation of the deity. The absence of any personal dispute or immediate provocation, combined with the specific targeting of a temple and the treatment meted out to the idol, supports the conclusion that the act was driven by hostility towards Hindu religious symbols and beliefs. The incident therefore, extended beyond material damage or theft, impacting the collective religious sentiments of the Hindu community and contributing to a sense of vulnerability regarding the safety and sanctity of their places of worship. Therefore, this case has been added to the tracker.
