Case Summary

A Hindu minor girl from Mirzapur district, Uttar Pradesh, was abducted, sexually assaulted, and pressured to convert to Islam by two Muslim minor boys. This incident came to light on 5th February 2026 when the mother of the Hindu minor girl filed a written complaint at Kotwali Dehat police station in Mirzapur. She stated that two Muslim minor boys had enticed her daughter away from home. After taking her away, they sexually assaulted her. During this period, they pressured the Hindu minor girl to convert to Islam. Following the complaint, a case was registered under relevant legal provisions, and an investigation was initiated into the incident. The matter was treated with urgency due to the involvement of a minor. The Superintendent of Police directed immediate action under the supervision of the Sadar Circle Officer. The Sadar Circle Officer instructed the station in charge of Kotwali Dehat, Amit Mishra, to ensure that the perpetrators were traced and detained without delay. Acting on information received, a police team led by Inspector in Charge Amit Mishra located the two Muslim minor boys. Both perpetrators were taken into custody and questioned. The necessary legal procedures for cases involving juveniles were followed during this process. After completion of the required formalities, both juvenile perpetrators were produced before the Juvenile Justice Board. The police initiated measures for the safety and counselling of the Hindu minor girl. The investigation regarding the abduction, sexual assault, and coercion for religious conversion remained ongoing. The authorities stated that strict action would be taken against those found guilty and that negligence at any level would not be tolerated.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category - Predatory proselytisation. Within this, the subcategory selected is - Harassment, threats, coercion for conversion. Harassment covers a wide range of behaviours of an offensive nature. It is commonly understood as behaviour that demeans, humiliates, and intimidates a person, including threats and coercion. Harassment and threats, in this case, find their root on discriminatory grounds which has the effect of nullifying a person’s rights or infringing upon his freedom to exercise his right specifically owing to the victim’s religious identity. Verbal and physical threats and psychological or physical harassment are often used against Hindu victims because they choose to practice their professed religion. Religious harassment also includes forced and involuntary conversions by harassment, threats or coercion. Coercion includes intimidatory tactics like force-feeding a Hindu victim beef to convert to another religion, forceful circumcision etc. In several cases documented, non-Hindu perpetrators or those who harbour specific animosity towards Hinduism, harass victims simply based on their religious identity. Such cases often also include harassment to ensure the Hindu victim abandons his/her professed religion and adopts the religion of the perpetrator. Such cases where Hindu victims are harassed to convert to the perpetrator’s religion are rooted in animosity towards the victim’s religious identity and are therefore documented as religiously motivated hate crimes. The other subcategory selected is- Proselytisation by grooming, brainwashing, manipulation or subtle indoctrination. The tertiary categories selected for this case are - Rape and sexual assault/harassment, Conversion of minor, and Family claims grooming. Religious brainwashing essentially means the often subtle and forcible indoctrination to induce someone to give up their religious beliefs to accept contrasting regimented ideas. Religious grooming or brainwashing also involves propaganda and manipulation. It involves the systematic effort, driven by religious malice and indoctrination, to persuade “non-believers’ to accept allegiance, command, or doctrine to and of a contrasting faith. Cases of such grooming or brainwashing are far more nuanced than direct threats, coercion, inducement and violence. In such cases, it is often seen that there is repeated, subtle and continual manipulation of the victim to induce disaffection towards their own faith and acceptance of the contrasting faith of the perpetrator. While subtle indoctrination is widely acknowledged as predatory, an element which is often understated in such conversions or the attempts of such conversion is the role of loyalty and trust which might develop between the perpetrator and the victim. Fiduciary relationships are often abused to affect such religious conversion. For example, an educator transmitting religious doctrine of a competing faith to a Hindu student. The Hindu student is likely to accept what the teacher is transmitting owing to existence of the fiduciary relationship. The exploitation of the fiduciary relationship to religiously indoctrinate victims would also be included in this category. Since the underlying animosity towards the victim’s faith forms the basis of predatory proselytization, such cases are considered religiously motivated hate crimes. In this case, a minor Hindu girl from Mirzapur district, Uttar Pradesh, was abducted, sexually assaulted, and pressured to convert to Islam by two minor Muslim boys. The Muslim perpetrators shattered the innocence of a Hindu child who should have been protected within the safety of her home, exploiting her vulnerability in the most cruel and calculated way imaginable. Every element of this ordeal, from the abduction to the coercion, stemmed directly from anti-Hindu animosity, marking it unequivocally as an anti-Hindu hate crime driven by a deliberate intent to target and demean the victim's faith. The act of forcibly abducting the Hindu girl from the secure confines of her family home exposed the deep-seated religious animosity of the Muslim perpetrators, who isolated her from all safeguards and loved ones before subjecting her to sexual assault and relentless pressure to convert to Islam. For a young girl, suddenly torn from her familiar world, this amounted to profound harassment, stripping away her sense of safety and leaving her terrified and alone in the hands of those who viewed her Hindu identity as a mark of inferiority. This calculated isolation served not just to control her body but to break her spirit, turning a child's life into a nightmare of religious persecution that demonstrated harassment at its core. The sexual assault in this case went far beyond any notion of isolated sexual gratification; when viewed alongside the forced conversion demands, it revealed a chilling pattern of religiously motivated sexual violence aimed squarely at a Hindu minor girl. Using sexual violence as a tool, the perpetrators dominated and humiliated the Hindu victim precisely because of her faith, using her body as a battleground to assert power over an innocent representative of the Hindu community. This was religiously motivated sexual violence, designed to instil fear and shame in Hindu families, where the trauma of such an attack lingers for a lifetime and sends a terrifying message to others like her, cementing its status as a clear hate crime. The pressure to convert a minor Hindu girl carried even greater weight, as her young age meant she lacked the emotional maturity and capacity for genuine consent, making any change of faith inherently coercive from the outset. Minors like her are vulnerable to manipulation and coercion, unable to grasp the lifelong consequences of abandoning their religious beliefs, and the perpetrators exploited this innocence ruthlessly to target her Hindu identity for erasure. For a child still forming her sense of self, this predatory tactic inflicted wounds that no one could fully heal, exposing the hate crime's predatory nature rooted in religious animosity and Islamic supremacy. The act of pressuring the abducted and assaulted Hindu victim to convert to Islam laid bare the perpetrators' utter contempt for her religious autonomy and fundamental right to practise her faith freely without fear or force. It treated her Hinduism as something disposable and inferior, unworthy of preservation, while signalling that her personal beliefs and agency as a Hindu girl held no value in their eyes. This religious violation extended beyond her to her entire community, portraying Hindu children as easy prey for conversion, and underscored a profound disrespect for her religious identity, making it a textbook religiously motivated hate crime. Given that this case met several parameters of a religiously motivated offence, it was added to the Hate Crime Database of the Hinduphobia Tracker. Disclaimer: The Hinduphobia Tracker records the dates of incidents based on when the crime occurred rather than when it was reported by the media.
