Case Summary

In the Kali Pahari area of Asansol, West Bengal, an ancient Hanuman temple was vandalised and its sacred idols were desecrated by a few unidentified miscreants. This occurred on 31 March 2026, just two days before the Hanuman Jayanti festival. As per media reports, on the day of the incident, the miscreants entered the temple and vandalised it. They also desecrated the idol of Lord Hanuman, along with the Shivalinga. Even idols of Brahma, Vishnu, and other deities were desecrated. As news of the incident spread, Hindu locals became increasingly angry, and a large crowd gathered at the scene. Following the incident, BJP leaders took charge. BJP candidate from Asansol South, Agnimitra Pal, and other party leaders arrived at the scene and launched a vigorous protest with their supporters. The BJP leaders stated that under the rule of Mamata Banerjee, several Hindu religious sites were continuously targeted in the state. Agnimitra Pal reacted strongly to the incident, stating that there were no CCTV cameras in the temple or anywhere nearby, raising questions about both the security system and the investigation. She also stated that mere assurances of an investigation were not enough; concrete action was also necessary. In protest, BJP workers led by Agnimitra Pal launched a sit-in protest in front of the Asansol South police station. Protesters completely blocked the main road by burning tyres on the Grand Trunk Road. The road was one of the busiest and most important routes in Asansol. The blockage brought the city to a standstill and severely disrupted normal life. Given the gravity of the situation, heavy police forces and central forces were deployed in the area. The police remained on high alert to prevent any untoward incident from occurring.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category- Attack on Hindu religious representations. The subcategory selected is- Attack on Temples. In Hinduism, a temple is the abode of the Deity. The Deity in the Temple is consecrated, thereby, making it a real, breathing entity. Hindus believe that not just the Deity but the temple premises itself are sacred to Hindus since Hindus hold the faith that the entire Temple space is an amalgamation of the divine energy of the deity. Given the central significance of Temples in Hindu Dharma, any attack against a Hindu Temple or its peripheral premises is an attack on the faith itself and is born out of animosity towards the faith, of which, the Temple is a central tenet. Any manner of attack against a Temple and/or its premises would therefore be considered a religiously motivated hate crime. The other subcategory selected is- Desecration of Hindu religious symbols. Icons and symbols or a religious representation of a spiritual ideal are widely revered in Hinduism. Iconography is of vital significance in the Hindu milieu. It helps connect people’s spiritual beliefs with the real world. Iconography within the Hindu faith takes several shapes and forms. Murtis are of most significance to Hindus, to which daily rituals, prayers and offerings are done. Besides the murtis, there are several other symbols which have deep significance in the Hindu faith – the Om and Swastika for example. Since these Hindu religious symbols hold paramount importance in Hinduism, any desecration of symbols, icons, murtis, religious representations and manifestations, is driven by animosity towards the faith itself which manifests itself through these murtis, icons and symbols. Therefore, any desecration of these Hindu religious symbols and representations is considered religiously motivated hate crimes under this category. This case is being added to the hate crime database of the Hinduphobia Tracker as the perpetrators vandalised an ancient Hanuman temple and desecrated idols of Lord Hanuman along with idols of other deities like Shiva, Vishnu, Brahma, and others, making it a clear case of religiously motivated hate crime fuelling anti-Hindu hostility. The deliberate targeting of this sacred site and its revered murtis (idols) reveals a profound intent to wound the Hindu community's deepest spiritual convictions. Such acts shatter the peace of devotees who pour their faith into these holy spaces, leaving lasting scars on their sense of security and devotion. The attack on the Hanuman temple itself showcases deep-seated religious animosity towards the Hindu community. Temples stand as the beating heart of Hindu life, cherished sanctuaries where families gather for prayers, festivals, and life-changing rituals that bind generations in shared reverence for the divine. Temples are institutions where Hindus believe that the deities reside and make their abode. They offer solace, spark joy during celebrations, and anchor daily worship, making every stone and pillar a vessel of profound spiritual energy. Henceforth, this attack and vandalism of the Hanuman temple amounts to a clear case of hatred and bigotry towards Hindus, their faith, and their sacred places of worship, making it a clear case of a religiously motivated hate crime. Furthermore, the act of desecrating the idol of Lord Hanuman, along with other Hindu deities, underscores a violation of sacred Hindu symbols and traditions. Lord Hanuman embodies unwavering devotion, strength, and selfless service in Hindu epics, inspiring millions to face life's battles with courage and loyalty, especially as his Jayanti approaches with vibrant processions and heartfelt chants. Hindu idols, or murtis, along with the Shivalinga as a sacred symbol of Lord Shiva's cosmic energy, represent living conduits to the divine, painstakingly consecrated through rituals like prana pratishtha to invite the deity's presence into worshippers' lives. Therefore, any act of desecration of these sacred Hindu symbols amounts to an affront to the sentiments of the Hindu community and amounts to an attack on the Hindu faith, making it a clear case of a religiously motivated hate crime. Desecrating sacred Hindu symbols like murtis of deities showcases the perpetrators' deep-seated religious animosity towards the Hindu faith and community, making it a hate crime. The timing of the attack, just two days before Hanuman Jayanti, reveals a calculated act of malice rather than random vandalism. As devotees prepared for vibrant festivities honouring Lord Hanuman, their protector, the ancient temple was desecrated, its Hanuman idol vandalised, and other deities' murtis damaged. This deliberate disruption hurt Hindu sentiments, hindered celebrations, and instilled fear during a sacred time, marking it as a clear, religiously motivated hate crime aimed at intimidating the entire Hindu community. In this current case, even though the perpetrators' identities remain unknown, their actions are clearly rooted in anti-Hindu hatred and bigotry. The raw pain inflicted on Hindu devotees demands recognition of this vicious intent. Therefore, this case is being added to the Hate Crime Database of the Hinduphobia Tracker.
