Case Summary

In Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, a Hindu woman was lured into a romantic relationship and deceived into a live-in relationship for 12 years by a Muslim man posing as a Hindu. The accused sexually exploited her during this long period. Following this, he later abandoned the woman and fled. The victim is a police officer, and the accused is identified as Firoz from the New Islamnagar area of Meerut, who worked at a factory manufacturing small gas cylinders in Gwalior about 12 years ago. During this time, he met the female police officer stationed there. The victim officer stated that Firoz befriended her by posing as a Hindu by changing his name, and gradually they grew close. Later, they began living together in a live-in relationship in Gwalior. During this time, the Hindu victim had no clue about the Muslim man's real identity. About a month ago, in February 2026, the accused Muslim youth went to Meerut to attend a wedding. Afterwards, he never returned to Gwalior and lost contact with the Hindu woman. When she received no response for a long time, the victim went to his home in New Islamnagar, Meerut, on 6 March 2026, where she was devastated. Upon arriving, she discovered that the accused Muslim man had concealed his true identity from her and that his real name was Firoz. The victim also stated that when she questioned the Muslim man's family about this, his mother and sister-in-law assaulted the female officer and drove her away. The woman then sought information from local residents. Upon inquiring, she learned that Firoz had eloped with his cousin on 1 March 2026. Following the incident, the Hindu woman filed a written complaint at the Lohia Nagar police station. According to the station in charge, Sumit Tomar, the matter is being investigated. Police say that after the investigation is complete, further action will be taken based on the facts.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category- Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. The subcategory selected is- Man pretends to be Hindu. The tertiary category selected is- Name Changed. When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. The other subcategory selected is- Brainwashed and/or Groomed. The tertiary category selected is- Rape and sexual assault/harassment. In our database, we have not added incidents where women have converted to another religion of their free will and no allegations of forced/involuntary conversion have been made. However, there are certain cases of conversion where the consent itself is a result of the brainwashing or grooming of a minor by the non-Hindu perpetrator trying to victimise a woman for her Hindu religious identity. The phenomenon of grooming points to non-Hindu perpetrators identifying their Hindu victims’ vulnerabilities and exploiting them over months and sometimes years, to extract the supposed ‘consent’ in order to convert their religion. In most cases of grooming, the victims are minors or the grooming started when the victim was a minor. In other cases of grooming, the non-Hindu perpetrator brainwashes and grooms a minor victim to extract their trust and then proceeds to rape them repeatedly with the intent of converting them to their faith. It is pertinent to understand here that when the victim is a minor, the ‘consent’ to convert or enter into a romantic relationship with an adult itself is redundant – addressed by POCSO. While every case of conversion of a minor and incidents of establishing a physical relationship with a minor by an adult is a crime, for the purpose of this database, a case would be considered a hate crime only if there is a distinct religious angle to the grooming. For example, in the UK, if a Hindu minor is targeted by Pakistani grooming gangs, it would be considered a hate crime because the victims are specifically targeted owing to their non-Muslim religious identity with the perpetrators being Muslim. In other cases, if a Hindu minor is brainwashed into entering a physical relationship with the non-Hindu adult perpetrator and the family alleges grooming/brainwashing of the minor to convert her religion, it would form a part of this database. If the victim is a Hindu adult, the case would form a part of this database only if the victim herself says that she was brainwashed/groomed to convert her religion. However, if the victim is deceased (murdered or otherwise), the case would form a part of this database if her family/friends provided testimony that the victim was brainwashed/groomed to convert her religion. Since these crimes have a distinct religious angle where the victim is being targeted owing to her Hindu religious identity, these cases are considered hate crime. In this Gwalior case, the Hindu woman police officer endured 12 years of deception in a live-in relationship with a Muslim man, Firoz, who posed as a Hindu to gain her trust. This act of concealment demonstrated clear bias and malicious intent towards her religion. By hiding his Muslim identity, Firoz manipulated her trust and targeted her under false pretences, indicating a premeditated effort to exploit her based on her Hindu background. The live-in arrangement legitimised the relationship in her eyes and the wider Hindu community, violating her right to informed consent about her partner's religion and infringing upon her beliefs. Firoz knew a Hindu woman like her would most likely refuse him if aware of his true identity, so he lied to circumvent this, directly pointing to religiously driven intent. This reflects a pattern where Hindu women face targeted deception with false identities by Muslim men, exposing deep-seated animosity towards Hinduism. Through this deliberate deception, the Hindu woman suffered prolonged sexual exploitation by Firoz under the false pretext of a committed relationship, spanning 12 years in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. This extended violation went beyond personal gain; it served as a targeted assault rooted in religious bias, aimed at humiliating and dominating her faith identity. By sustaining intimacy through lies about his Hindu persona, Firoz desecrated her religious boundaries, treating her body and devotion as conquests to erode her Hindu values over time. Such relentless exploitation, knowing her faith would bar the relationship otherwise, showcased animosity that sought to subjugate her spiritually and emotionally. This methodical dominance inflicted lasting trauma, reinforcing Hindu women's vulnerability to interfaith predators who weaponise trust to assert religious superiority and shatter community honour. The crime's religious profiling elevates it to hate-motivated violence, not mere romance fraud. When the Hindu woman police officer went to Firoz's home in New Islamnagar, Meerut, to seek answers after he vanished, his mother and sister-in-law assaulted her physically and drove her away. This violent rejection compounded her 12 years of deception and sexual exploitation, turning emotional betrayal into brutal physical trauma and public humiliation. As a uniformed officer, the attack stripped her dignity further, exposing her to communal scorn for her Hindu identity tied to the interfaith deception. The family's aggression underscored religious animosity, rejecting her not just as an outsider but as a symbol of the faith Firoz targeted, intensifying her suffering through layered violation of body, trust, and community standing. This escalation transformed personal deceit into collective hostility, deepening the hate crime's impact on her religious identity. Firoz abandoned the Hindu woman abruptly after 12 years, fleeing to Meerut for a wedding and then eloping with his cousin on 1 March 2026, never returning or maintaining contact. This callous departure showcased that he never valued her as a genuine partner but exploited her solely as a target for religious conquest and prolonged sexual exploitation. By posing as Hindu to sustain the relationship, he treated her faith as a barrier to conquer through intimacy, only to discard her once his scheme ended, revealing the transient nature of his intent. Such abandonment reinforces the crime's religious motivation, humiliating her Hindu identity by reducing her to a disposable object in a pattern of anti-Hindu predation. This deliberate devaluation elevates the act to a hate crime, weaponising her devotion against her for religious dominance and erasure. Given that this case meets the parameters of a hate crime, it is added to the Hate Crime database of the Hinduphobia Tracker. Disclaimer: The Hinduphobia Tracker records incident dates based on when the victim’s ordeal began rather than when the media reported it. In this case, reports state her ordeal began twelve years back, but do not mention the exact date. The only exact date mentioned is 6 March 2026, when she discovered his real identity; hence, based on both information and an indicative date of 6 March 2014, it is being selected as the date of the incident. In this case, perpetrator count is selected as 3 because, along with Firoz, his mother and sister-in-law also victimised the Hindu woman through assault. Therefore, the perpetrator count remains 3.
