Hindu woman decieved into relationship by Muslim gym trainer pretending to be Hindu, raped keeping son at knife point when she finds out real identity

Case Summary
In Gwalior district of Madhya Pradesh, a gym trainer was booked after he raped a Hindu woman while holding her son at knife point. Accused Firoz Khan introduced himself to the woman pretending to be a Hindu, as Raja, to become friends with the woman on social media. The two became close thereafter. The woman was raising her son independently after a divorce. When the 32-year-old Hindu woman found out that he was faking his identity, she ceased communication with him. On March 29 2023, the accused barged into the victim’s house in New Rachna Nagar in the Gola Ka Mandir area at around 11 pm. He allegedly put a knife around the neck of the victim’s son and raped her. When the victim protested, accused Firoz thrashed her and also destroyed household items. It is also reported that after she stopped talking to Firoz, he would blackmail and threaten the woman to continue her relationship with him. He had threatened her saying he would defame her and make intimate pictures and videos viral if she resisted his advances.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. In this, the Muslim man pretended to be Hindu and befriended the woman. When the woman found out his real identity, he proceeded to rape her while holding her son at knifepoint. The misrepresentation of his religious identity was in itself a hate crime since the change in identity points to the fact that the victim was specifically targeted for her religious identity. Further, since the man proceeded to rape the victim after she found out his real identity adds to the hate crime since the rape itself was also religiously motivated. This case is therefore being categorised as a hate crime.
