Case Summary

On October 18, 2024, a violent incident took place at a Sharad Purnima celebration organized by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in Karni Vihar, Jaipur, Rajasthan. RSS workers gathered at a local temple to distribute “kheer” as prasad, chanting Hanuman Chalisa, when two local men, Naseeb Chaudhary and his son, entered and demanded the event be stopped due to noise and crowd concerns. Following an argument, the two men summoned a group armed with knives who attacked the RSS devotees around 10 pm, disrupting the religious gathering. Ten RSS workers were injured, some critically, with deep stab wounds targeting the chest and stomach. Among the injured were Shankar Bagda, Murarilal, and Lakhan Singh Jadoun, who were taken to SMS Hospital in Jaipur. The attackers reportedly threw the prasad on the ground before assaulting the attendees. After the attack, RSS supporters gathered at the Karni Vihar police station, demanding immediate arrests. Naseeb Chaudhary and his son were detained.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

The violent disruption of a Sharad Purnima celebration, a cherished Hindu festival, points to a deliberate attempt to suppress the Hindu devotee's right to openly practice and express their faith. The act of forcibly ending a traditional observance, which included chanting and distribution of prasad, and assaulting devotees with weapons, reflects an intent to silence Hindu expressions of devotion. Moreover, the act of throwing the prasad on the ground went beyond physical violence—it symbolized a fundamental disrespect for Hindu customs, aimed at discouraging public displays of Hindu identity. Such interference in a religious gathering does not merely indicate opposition to a gathering or noise but underscores a deeper hostility toward Hindu religious expressions. Therefore, this incident also qualifies as a hate crime aimed at restricting Hindu identity and worship, reinforcing the attackers’ animosity toward Hinduism and this is why, it has been added to the tracker. It may be noted here that although two accused individuals were detained, the attack itself was carried out by a larger, organized mob. This involvement of a group intensifies the severity and intent behind the incident, transforming it from a mere altercation into a coordinated assault aimed specifically at Hindu devotees. However, those who were arrested for the attack and those who were attacked were from the same community. Reports indicated that the conflict could have been because of land-grabbing attempts. While for a hate crime to have occurred it is not necessary that the perpetrator belongs to a different religion, but only, that he harbours animosity towards the faith and its adherents itself, the police statement as well has not clarified what the motive of the attack was. This case is therefore being added to the undecided database. If more information emerges, it would be added to the hate crime database.
