Aashiq Ansari kidnaps 18-year-old Hindu girl after luring, girl's father complaints of forced religious conversion
Case Summary
In Bareilly, a Muslim man from a village abducted an 18-year-old girl, luring her into a 'relationship' and attempting to force her to convert. The incident created tension in the village. To prevent unrest, police were deployed to the area. The girl, a resident of Bithri Chainpur, went missing on October 14 around 11 a.m. after leaving home for an errand. When she did not return, her father filed a missing report at the local police station. It was later discovered that some jewellery and ₹10,000 in cash were also missing from the house. Upon receiving information that Aashiq Ansari, a Muslim man from the village, had lured the girl away with the help of his family and friends, the girl's father reported him for kidnapping her and converting her. The father filed a formal complaint against Ansari, his family, and associates on October 15. As news of the incident spread, tension grew in the village, which had a mixed population. In response, Ansari's entire family fled. A search operation was launched to locate the girl and the accused.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, the family has alleged that the Muslim man and his family lured and kidnapped a Hindu woman to convert her to Islam. However, the details of the case make it technically difficult to classify this case as a religiously motivated hate crime. While the testimony of the family of the victim is given importance in establishing whether a case is a religiously motivated hate crime or not, in this case, the details reveal that the victim was 18 years old - an adult. While the family has alleged forced conversion, it is also entirely possible that the woman eloped with the Muslim man our of her own free will and being an adult, she has the agency to do so. Even as far as conversion is concerned, it is not entirely impossible that if she converted, she converted willingly. The suspicion of a consecual elopment becomes stronger because there was cash and jewellery missing from the house. For that reason, this case is being added to the undecided database. If more information emerges, it would be added to the hate crime database.
