Case Summary

On March 31, 2024, Rajasthan Police detained three Muslim juveniles in North Jaipur's Bhatta Basti Police station area for throwing pieces of meat into Lakshmiranayan and Bholeshwar Temple. The children, aged between 10 and 12, claimed they saw a video online suggesting that Hindus would faint if meat was thrown into temples. The incident, reported on March 30, led to an FIR being filed after devotees found meat pieces in the temple premises. A 70-year-old woman filed a complaint, prompting a police investigation. The Hindu community later cleaned the temple, and Gangajal was used for purification. The police swiftly detained the juveniles, who were released to their parents' custody by the court due to their age, with a warning.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

In Hinduism, a temple is the abode of the Deity. The Deity in the Temple is consecrated, thereby, making it a real, breathing entity. Hindus believe that not just the Deity but the temple premises itself are sacred to Hindus since Hindus hold the faith that the entire Temple space is an amalgamation of the divine energy of the deity. Given the central significance of Temples in Hindu Dharma, any attack against a Hindu Temple or its peripheral premises is an attack on the faith itself and is born out of animosity towards the faith, of which, the Temple is a central tenet. Any manner of attack against a Temple and/or its premises would therefore be considered a religiously motivated hate crime. In this case, meat was thrown in the temple by the Muslim perpetrators with the explicit intent of 'making Hindus faint'. This essentially means that the intent of the perpetrators was specifically to target the Hindu community as a whole. When the intent is to target an entire community by desecrating the temple, it becomes evident that the crime itself was driven by religious animosity and hostility. This case is therefore being added to the hate crime database.
