Hindu girl abducted in Sindh, community members protest
Case Summary
Members of the Hindu community and traders in Dera Murad Jamali staged a protest condemning the recent abduction of a young girl named Priya Kumari. They criticised the Sindh government for its incompetence in locating and rescuing Kumari, who was abducted from Sukkur. Protesters highlighted the routine abduction of innocent children in Sindh and expressed concern over the deteriorating security conditions for religious minorities. Led by senior Hindu community figures Mukhi Manak Lal and Seth Tara Chand, the rally drew participants from various sectors, including traders and youth representatives. The leaders urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah to take immediate action for the safe return of the girl and deliver justice to the minority community, warning of nationwide protests if their demands were ignored. Human Rights Focus Pakistan (HRFP) also condemned religious persecution of minorities in Pakistan and called for legislation to ensure equal status for all citizens. Naveed Walter, the President of HRFP said that even in the short duration of the year so far, several alarming incidents targeting minorities have been reported.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, there is a strong suspicion that the minor Hindu girl was abducted by Muslim extremists, who persecute Hindus in Pakistan on a regular basis. The persecution of minorities, especially Hindus, in Muslim majority countries like Pakistan is an ongoing campaign where several Hindu girls are abducted, forcefully converted to Islam, raped and married to their abductors. In this case, however, there is no clue or allegation that could substantiate that the minor girl was abducted/persecuted owing to her religious identity. For that reason, this case is being documented as undecided. If more information emerges, it would be added to the hate crime database.
