Pregnant cow slaughter, Hindu activists attacked with sword by two Muslim youths in Valsad, Gujarat
Case Summary
In the Sarigam village of Valsad district, Gujarat, a pregnant cow was brutally killed by two Muslim youths, an act that constituted both animal cruelty and a serious breach of public order in a communally sensitive area. The incident occurred on the night of 24 December 2025 behind an industrial unit near Rohitwas, where Saddam Shahbuddin Khan and another Muslim youth took a cow on the pretext of feeding it and subsequently slaughtered it for the purpose of selling its meat to local butchers. When gau rakshaks (Hindu activists) received information about the incident, they informed the police. A team from Bhilad Police Station conducted a raid and found the severed head of the pregnant cow along with beef remains and other materials at the site, clearly indicating a violent and deliberate killing. During the raid, Gau rakshaks apprehended the Muslim youth and handed him over to the police, while the second accused, Saddam Shahbuddin Khan, attacked them with a sword before fleeing the scene. Following an investigation, Saddam Shahbuddin Khan was also arrested by the police. Police registered a case against the accused, seized beef remains, pellets and other evidence, and initiated legal and forensic procedures. The police themselves became the complainant in view of the gravity of the offence. After the arrests, a meeting was held at the Sarigam Gram Panchayat office with the participation of police officials, local residents, and representatives from Hindu and Muslim communities, including members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, where concerns were raised over the killing of a pregnant cow, and appeals were made to maintain communal peace. Police stated that the situation was under control and that further action would be taken based on the investigation.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, two Muslim individuals were involved in the killing of a pregnant cow and were subsequently arrested by the police. The cow is considered sacred in the Hindu religion. Often, cows are smuggled for slaughter by non-Hindu perpetrators as a mark of insult to the Hindu faith. There have been several documented cases throughout history where cow slaughter is used as a method to insult the Hindu faith, convert Hindus (by force-feeding beef), and desecrate Hindu temples. In all cases of cow smuggling or slaughter, there is a suspicion of religious animosity against Hindus working as a motivating factor. In the present case, the gravity of the offence was further aggravated when Hindu activists (gau rakshaks), who intervened after receiving information about the slaughter, were attacked with a sword by one of the accused while attempting to prevent the crime. However, in the absence of any concrete evidence that the crime was religiously motivated, this case is being categorised under the 'Undecided' database. Should further evidence emerge indicating ideological intent, religious hostility, or targeted animus against the Hindu community, the case will be reassessed and moved to the hate crime database accordingly.
