Case Summary

In the Malthone area of Sagar district, Madhya Pradesh, a 30-year-old Hindu named Mohit Patwa ended his life after being harassed by a Muslim man named Anish Khan, a Muslim woman named Sania Khan, along with their accomplice. According to reports, the Hindu man hanged himself in his home and recorded two videos in which he held three individuals responsible for his death. He stated that Anish Khan, Sania Khan, and Rashmi Patwa were blackmailing him because he came to know that they were operating an Islamic conversion racket, where they were luring Hindu girls towards Muslim men for forced religious conversion. He stated that when he came to know about their activities, he opposed them and threatened to expose them, following which the three threatened him with false criminal cases. They also warned him that even Hindu organisations or the police can't do anything and would not be able to protect him. In the recording, Mohit also said that Anish had also trapped Rashmi and raped her. He further expressed that the constant harassment and threats had left him distressed and that the three were directly responsible for driving him to suicide. He also circulated the videos on social media. After receiving information, the police arrived at the scene and sent the body for a post-mortem. His mobile phone was seized, and the videos were confirmed by the investigating officer. No suicide note was recovered from the scene. The videos quickly spread on social media, causing widespread attention. Mohit’s statement in the videos clearly named Sania Khan, Rashmi Patwa, and Anish Khan as those involved in conversion activities and blackmail, declaring them responsible for his death. As of the date of writing this report, the police registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category of - Attack resulting in death. Within it, the sub-category selected is - Attacked for opposing radicals or trying to save victim. In several cases, Hindus are attacked for opposing religiously motivated crimes being committed against a fellow Hindu or simply for voicing an opinion opposing radical elements, who either have in the past or continue to persecute Hindus. In such cases, the initial attack against the victim, against which the Hindu was trying to defend the victim, would also need to be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime. Since the initial crime itself was religiously motivated and the subsequent crime of attempting to save the victim or speaking against the radical elements ends up inviting a violent attack, it would also be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime. Under this category, cases where the attack led to the death of the Hindu victim/s would be documented. This case has been added to the tracker because a Hindu man named Mohit Patwa was deliberately targeted for opposing forced religious conversion by the Muslim perpetrators. The victim had discovered that the accused, Anish Khan, Sania Khan, and Rashmi Patwa, were engaged in luring Hindu girls towards Muslim men for conversion. When he resisted their activities and threatened to expose them, he was subjected to sustained blackmail, intimidation, and threats of false criminal cases. This was not a random extension of violence but a deliberate targeting of someone who tried to stop radical behaviour and stand up against religiously motivated offences, including forced religious conversion. Such actions by the Muslim perpetrators were rooted in communal hatred. The threats against Mohit were meant to send a message that Hindus who oppose conversion rackets will face severe consequences. Mohit was not victimised due to any personal enmity but because he challenged activities designed to undermine Hindu religious identity. His opposition to these conversion rackets directly triggered the harassment and pressure that ultimately drove him to suicide. Such persecution reflects a supremacist mindset, where Hindus are treated as inferior and punished when they resist or oppose activities carried out by members of the Muslim community. Mohit’s persecution and death were therefore not isolated acts of malice but part of a wider pattern of intimidation used to enforce silence and assert dominance. Mohit’s death must therefore be recognised not as an isolated tragedy, but as a hate crime rooted in communal hostility. He was punished for refusing to remain silent and for defending Hindu interests against religiously motivated subversion. Therefore, this case has been added to the hate crime database.
