Case Summary

In Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, one Mohammad Alim of Jadopur used to go to a coaching centre to learn computers where he befriended a Hindu girl. He introduced himself as Anand and had a Kalava tied to his hand. As the friendship progressed, the man started talking about marriage and the Hindu victim fell into his trap. On March 13, 2022, the accused took the girl to the Radha Swami temple in Bareilly and applied vermillion (sindoor), promising to marry her soon. He then took the victim to his friend Talim's house where he had sex with her and also made a video of it. The accused then started blackmailing her into doing sexual favours by threatening to make her private pictures and videos viral. He kept raping her by taking her to hotels. The victim eventually got pregnant and discovered that Anand was actually Mohammad Alim, son of Sabir. When she went to the Alim's house, his family members were also present. She asked him to abort her pregnancy, convert her to Islam and marry her. Alim gave her contraceptive pills, took her to a nursing home and got her aborted there. He further threatened to kill her if she told anything about this to anyone. Troubled by the threats, the victim lodged a police complaint.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. What gives this case a distinct religious angle is that the Muslim perpetrator actively hid his religion and pretended to be a Hindu to ensure that the victim woman married him. He purposely hid his religion to deceive the Hindu girl. Further, when his real identity was revealed, he threatened the Hindu victim to convert to Islam, failing which, he would cause her harm.
