Muslim man traps Dalit woman pretending to be Hindu, impregnates her and poisons her to death when she refuses to convert

Case Summary
In Shahjahanpur area of Uttar Pradesh, a 23-year-old Dalit woman, identified as Seema Gautam, was trapped in a love affair. Two accused, namely Mohd Naved and Farhan Khan have been taken into custody. The police are on the lookout for the third accused, Mustaquim. The Dalit woman was three months pregnant when she was poisoned to death by her live-in partner Naved after she refused to convert to Islam. The deceased worked as a receptionist at Dr Shroff Eye Charitable Hospital. She met the accused Naved at her workplace. Naved had presented himself as a Hindu to befriend the woman and enter a live-in relationship with her. He then raped her and started forcing her to convert to Islam using her objectionable pictures. Seema was in critical condition when Naved and his accomplice Farhan Khan took her to the hospital. The two informed medical officials that the woman was Naved's wife, Zoya Siddiqui. The hospital staff found them suspicious as they tried to flee after learning the woman had died. Subsequently, the police were informed and the duo was caught.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. In this case, a Muslim man concealed his religious identity and pretended to be a Hindu to lure a Hindu woman. He forced her to convert to Islam, blackmailed her with her intimate pictures, raped and poisoned her when she refused to convert. Since the religious motive of the crime is evident from the above facts, this case has been documented as a hate crime.
