Muslim man arrested for abducting minor Hindu girl, forcefully marrying, assaulting and converting her to Islam

Case Summary
Maharashtra Police filed an FIR and arrested one Muslim man named Javed Sheikh, 22, for abducting a 16-year-old Hindu girl, sexually assaulting her and then forcefully marrying her in the Manchar city of Pune. The case dates back to the year 2019, when the victim had just finished her 10th standard examination. She could not be found after she returned home. The father of the girl immediately filed a missing person complaint. Years passed but the administration failed at searching for the girl. They later discovered that the victim was trapped in a love affair and abducted by one Javed. The girl was finally rescued by her brother and his friends and was brought home. She was diagnosed with severe depression and scared to be around even her family members. The accused married the victim in December 2020 as per Islamic rituals and the legal document (Nikahnama) of the event was accessed which claimed that they were ‘adults’ and Muslims by religion. As per the victim's complaint, Asma, Javed, his mother and his grandmother kept her hostage for months and tortured her by burning her with cigarettes and assaulting her. She was forced to wear a burqa, offer namaz and fed mutton. Javed established sexual relations with her without her will. Allegedly, the girl was also thrown into a racket of prostitution for around 6 months. The accused was arrested on May 17, 2023.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been published here because it satisfies at least one particular requirement of religiously motivated hate crimes against Hindu women, which is that the Muslim perpetrator forced the victim to convert and for that he assaulted her and forced her to follow Islamic principles against her will. In such cases, a non-Hindu man is in a relationship with a Hindu woman when the pressure to convert her religion begins to manifest. The relationship in such cases is mostly consensual and the religious identity of the perpetrator is known to the Hindu woman in the relationship, however, at some point during the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts to force the victim to convert her religion and give up her Hindu religious identity. In such cases, the methods used to force the victim to convert her religion often revolve around force-feeding beef, forcing her to wear hijab, forcing her to read the Kalma or even pressurizing the victim to do ‘Niqah’, which is marriage under Islamic law, with a prerequisite being conversion to Islam. Cases where a Hindu woman consensually converts to Islam in a relationship will be left out of the hate crime database, even though it could be argued in several cases that the conversion was a result of religious brainwashing.
