Hindu student commits suicide, uploads "do not forget Naseem, Maulana" on status; family says he was forced to convert
Case Summary
An MBA student named Deepak Singh from Umedanda village of Jharkhand committed suicide in his rented apartment. Before committing suicide, Deepak wrote a mysterious WhatsApp status asking his friends and family to keep in mind the names of Maulana and Naseem. Reportedly, Anil Singh, the father, registered a police complaint stating that his son was being forced to change his religion from Hinduism to Islam. In the complaint, he said that Deepak was in love with a Muslim girl Naseem from Dakra. She took Deepak to a Maulana who suggested he change his religion. The duo then started forcing Deepak to convert to Islam to save his relationship. They also demanded money from him, for which he had to sell his bike.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, the Hindu boy who committed suicide was in a relationship with a Muslim woman. The woman then introduced him to a Maulana and others who forced him to convert to Islam to 'save his relationship'. We can assume that the Muslim woman had communicated to the Hindu boy that their relationship could only survive if he converted to Islam. It was the pressure that led him to commit suicide. This case is one where it was the pressure to convert to Islam, stemming from inherent hatred towards Hinduism and the religious doctrine of Muslims being allowed to marry only Muslims, that claimed the life of Deepak Singh.
