Muslim man poses as a Hindu to trap Hindu girl, marries her in temple then starts pressurising her to convert to Islam
Case Summary
Mohd Amir Suhail met a Hindu girl in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, by pretending to be a Hindu man 'Golu'. He established a sexual relationship with her and asked her to marry him. In January 2021, the girl gave in to pressure and wed Golu in a temple. The victim said that she was unaware that Golu was a Muslim at the time. When Golu's true identity was discovered after the couple had been married for almost two years, he began pressuring the girl to convert to Islam. The girl fled the colony and arrived at her parents' Gorakhpur home after learning the truth about Mohd Amir Suhail. There the victim narrated her ordeal to her family, following which, they filed a complaint against the accused in the Khajni police station. The police registered a case based on the complaint.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. In this case, a non-Hindu man concealed his religious identity and pretended to be a Hindu to lure a Hindu woman. Since the religious motive of the crime is evident from the fact that the man pretended to be a Hindu to trap a Hindu woman, this case has been documented as a hate crime.
