Hindu woman assaulted and abandoned after marrying Muslim man, despite conversion to Islam
Case Summary
In the Shravasti district of Uttar Pradesh, a Hindu woman from Nagpur named Swati fell in love with a man named Safique Khan through social media. They both got into a relationship and then married, during which Swati converted to Islam and adopted the name Nargis Khan. However, after the birth of their child, Safique abandoned Swati, leaving her with no option but to file a police complaint. Swati reported that Safique, son of Ajjan Khan from Hasina village, lured her into marriage. They met on social media, got into a relationship, and eventually married. They initially lived in Nagpur, where, upon reaching the house, Swati alleges she was met with hostility. In her complaint, she stated: “The accused verbally abused me with slurs, physically assaulted me with punches, kicks, and slaps, and struck me on the head with a lathi (stick). He also threatened to kill me, leaving injuries all over my body.” Swati filed a police complaint, and with the intervention of Shravasti Superintendent of Police Ghanshyam Chaurasia, the case was registered under Sections 115(2), 352, and 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The police also detained Safique's father for questioning. According to media reports, initially blinded by love, Swati accepted a new identity as Nargis Khan and married Safique as per Islamic law, but yet got mistreated by her in-laws because of her Hindu background. So Swati approached the police to seek justice.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, Swati, a Hindu woman from Nagpur, entered into a relationship with a Muslim man, Safique, through social media, married him, and voluntarily converted to Islam, adopting the name Nargis Khan. Later, she filed a police complaint alleging domestic abuse, abandonment, and hostility from her in-laws. It is also important to note that Swati is an adult and has exercised her agency in choosing both her partner and her conversion. The complaint primarily involves issues of marital abuse, abandonment, and domestic violence, which—although deeply troubling—do not, on the available evidence, conclusively establish that the violence was driven by religious animosity alone. Therefore, while this case raises red flags and will remain under close watch, in the absence of clear evidence that religion was the central trigger, we are placing it in our ‘Undecided’ database. Should further evidence emerge indicating that Swati was coerced into conversion or targeted solely on account of her Hindu identity, the case will be reclassified into our hate crime database. Disclaimer: It is important to clarify that the report does not specify the exact date when the woman's ordeal began, but it mentions that the accused assaulted the victim on 3rd December 2024. Since this is the earliest date mentioned, we are considering this as when the victim's ordeal began and using this as the incident date. While media coverage of the incident emerged on 6th December 2024, the Hinduphobia Tracker records the incident based on when the victim’s ordeal began, not when it was reported.
