Case Summary

Two cow smugglers were arrested in an encounter in the Khandar subdivision of Sawai Madhopur district. Police seized a pickup truck loaded with seven bulls and a bike during the operation. The incident took place in Sumanpura village, where 4-5 individuals were loading bulls into a pickup truck near a government school. Bajrang Dal members and local Gausevaks, alerted about the activity, arrived at the scene and managed to apprehend two smugglers. The other suspects escaped under the cover of darkness. During the confrontation, the smugglers were beaten by the group before the police were informed. Chhan and Baharwanda Khurd police, led by station in-charge Daulat Singh, responded promptly, taking the two smugglers into custody and seizing the vehicle and bike. The rescued bulls were relocated to Ladwan Gaushala. This arrest followed reports of stray cattle disappearing in the Khandar area over several days. In response, Bajrang Dal members and cow protectors had been monitoring the area, which enabled them to intercept the smugglers. A case was registered, and the police began further investigations. This incident highlighted the growing efforts by local groups to curb cow smuggling in the region.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

The cow is considered sacred in the Hindu religion. Often, cows are slaughtered by non-Hindu perpetrators as a mark of insult to the Hindu faith. There have been several documented cases throughout history where cow slaughter is used as a method to insult the Hindu faith, convert Hindus (by force-feeding beef) and desecrate temples. In all cases of cow slaughter, there is a suspicion of religious animosity against Hindus working as a motivating factor, however, in the absence of any concrete indication, this case is being categorised as 'undecided'. If more details emerge, it would be added to the hate crime database.
