Hindu woman commits suicide after repeated molestation and threats by Muslim man
Case Summary
In Mehmedabad, Kheda, a Hindu married woman took her own life after being subjected to repeated molestation, harassment, and threats by a Muslim man identified as Tausif Pathan, whom she named in her suicide note as the cause of her death. The police have launched an investigation and are working to arrest Tausif. The woman, living with her husband and two daughters, had been targeted by Tausif through persistent phone calls and messages. He intruded into her home on one occasion and continued to harass her even after she objected. Whenever she blocked one number, Tausif resumed contact with others. He also attempted to extort money and threatened to harm her husband and tarnish her reputation in the community. The harassment escalated in the months preceding her death. On 6th August, while visiting Ahmedabad with her family, she informed them of the threats and abuse she was enduring. Despite the family’s efforts to console her, the continuous pressure and intimidation by Tausif left her feeling trapped and helpless. Before ending her life, the woman documented her ordeal in a suicide note, explicitly naming Tausif Pathan and demanding strict action against him. She described how he had ruined her life, threatened her and her family, and used extortion to coerce her, making it clear that his actions directly led to her decision. The family had filed a complaint in March, after Tausif entered her home and molested her while she was alone. Following the suicide, police have taken immediate action based on the previous complaint and have formed teams to apprehend Tausif and hold him accountable for his crimes.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case raises serious concerns as to whether the repeated harassment, molestation, and threats faced by the Hindu woman were motivated by religious animosity on the part of the Muslim accused, Tausif Pathan. The persistent targeting of the victim through intrusion, extortion, and intimidation may suggest an underlying bias against her faith. In many previous cases, Hindu women have faced coercion or harassment from Muslim men, often with the expectation of conversion or compliance with religious demands. Such patterns raise legitimate questions about whether the abuse in this case involved elements of religiously motivated exploitation. However, in this particular incident, there is no conclusive evidence that the harassment and threats were driven by the victim’s Hindu identity. The victim’s suicide note cites Tausif’s actions and threats as the cause of her death but does not reference any religious motive. Since there is no clear evidence of a religious motive in this case, and neither the reports nor the victim’s family have suggested one, it has been placed in the ‘Undecided’ category in the database. If any further information emerges indicating religious motivation as a factor, then this case will be reclassified under the hate crime database. Disclaimer: It is important to clarify that none of the media sources covering this case have specified the exact date on which the victim committed suicide. Therefore, for documentation purposes, we have recorded the date based on when the incident was reported in the media
