Hindu woman deceived with false promise of marriage, raped and assaulted by Muslim man for refusing conversion to islam; family received death threats

Case Summary
In the Ashok Garden area of Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, a Hindu woman was lured into a relationship by a Muslim man under the pretext of marriage. The accused sexually exploited her and subsequently attempted to force her to convert to Islam. When she refused, she was beaten, threatened and raped by the Muslim perpetrator. Hinduphobia Tracker managed to contact the police, who confirmed that the victim was a Hindu woman. According to reports, the Muslim perpetrator is identified as Aman Hasan. The victim was living separately from her husband after marriage. As per the victim, in 2020, she met Aman Hasan while working at a private finance company. During this time, Hasan enticed her into a romantic relationship with false promises of marriage. He then raped her on multiple occasions. Later, Hasan began pressuring the woman to convert to Islam. When the victim refused to convert to Islam, the accused reneged on his promise of marriage. Furthermore, when she protested, the accused threatened to kill her, her brother, and other family members. The woman stated that when she again raised the topic of marriage, the accused once more insisted on religious conversion. When the victim refused, Hasan physically assaulted and raped her. Following this, the matter was reported to the police. The victim approached the police and filed a complaint against the accused. The police registered a case against Hasan and began an investigation.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the hate crime database under the primary category- Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. The subcategory selected is- Forced conversion before marriage. In such cases, a non-Hindu man is in a relationship with a Hindu woman when the pressure to convert her religion begins to manifest. In such cases, typically, two patterns emerge. First, when the relationship is consensual, and the religious identity of the perpetrator is known to the Hindu woman in the relationship, however, at some point during the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts to force the victim to convert her religion and give up her Hindu religious identity. The second is when the woman gets into a marriage with the man pretending to share her faith. Later, when the truth is revealed, the man starts pressuring the woman to convert her religion and give up her religious identity. In both the situations, the methods used to force the victim to convert her religion often revolve around force-feeding beef, forcing her to wear hijab, forcing her to read the Kalma or even pressurizing the victim to do ‘Nikah’, which is marriage under Islamic law, with a prerequisite being conversion to Islam. Cases where a Hindu woman consensually converts to Islam in a relationship will be left out of the hate crime database, even though it could be argued in several cases that the conversion was a result of religious brainwashing. The other subcategory selected is- Assault or threat upon refusal to convert. When Hindu women are in a relationship with non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman faces threats or assault after she refuses to convert and change her religious identity owing to pressure/force by the non-Hindu man. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim. Somewhere along the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts pressurizing the Hindu woman to convert to Islam and upon her refusal, assaults or threatens the victim. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. Cases where the Hindu woman converts to Islam and does not file a complaint about the force or threat, are not considered a part of the hate tracker, even though, it may be argued that the woman was brainwashed or threatened to convert to Islam. The other subcategory selected is- Rape for refusal to convert. When Hindu women are in a relationship with non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman faces pressure/threats/violence to convert and change her religious identity by the non-Hindu man. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim. Somewhere along the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts pressuring the Hindu woman to convert. In some of these cases, the association could be non-consensual as well or, the religious identity of the non-Muslim man could be previously unknown to the Hindu victim. As the case may be, in such cases, the non-Hindu man forces himself sexually on the Hindu woman when she refuses his advances and pressures to convert her religion. The rape of the woman is often seen as either a punishment for the woman refusing to convert. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. The other sub-category selected is - Torture of family to force woman to convert. When Hindu women are in a relationship with non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman is forced to convert her religion. Several methods are used for such forced conversion. The non-Hindu man is often documented to issue threats and even employ violence. One of the ways used by such perpetrators is threatening and/or torturing the family members of the Hindu woman to pressure her to convert. The perpetrators in such cases issue threats to harm or torture the family of the woman. In some cases, there is also violence directed towards the family to force the Hindu woman to convert. Such crimes aim to blackmail the victim into changing her religion by inducing fear of harm to her family. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. In this instance, although the Muslim accused did not conceal his religious identity, the nature of the relationship suggests that the Hindu woman was initially led to believe that her faith would not be a barrier to their romantic involvement. Trusting the accused’s assurances, she entered into the relationship, during which the man raped her several times under the pretence of marriage. However, his true intentions were revealed when he pressured her to convert to Islam. This demonstrates a deliberate targeting of the Hindu woman, with the intent to isolate her from her faith and impose a different religious identity upon her. Such manipulation reflects the accused’s clear bias against Hinduism. His actions were not merely about physical exploitation but were rooted in a desire to strip the victim of her Hindu identity and force her into adopting Islam. Given these elements, the case glaringly demonstrates that the actions of the perpetrator were religiously motivated. This act stems from deep-seated animosity towards the victim due to her religious identity. The victim was subjected to death threats and physical assaults because she refused to abandon her Hindu faith. The accused made it clear that her safety depended upon her willingness to convert to Islam. When she stood firm in her beliefs, he escalated his intimidation, warning her that he would kill not only her but also her brother and other family members. By threatening harm to her brother and other family members, the accused sought to instil fear and force compliance, using the well-being of her loved ones as leverage to achieve his religiously motivated goals. Such acts are designed to break the victim’s resistance, not only by attacking her directly but by endangering those she cares for, thus amplifying the psychological and emotional trauma. These threats were not random; they were directly linked to her religious identity and her refusal to change it. Such threats are a form of psychological terror, aiming to harass the victim for her faith. These instances highlight even more clearly that the act was not a random, isolated incident of manipulation and sexual exploitation, but rather a premeditated move to exploit the Hindu woman because of her religious identity. The perpetrator coerced her with death threats and physical assault in an attempt to make her abandon her faith, making this an instance of religiously motivated crime. Furthermore, the abuse did not stop at threats and physical assaults. When the woman refused to convert, the accused resorted to sexual violence as a means of coercion and punishment. This horrific act was not only a violation of her body, but also an attempt to break her spirit and force her into submission. The use of rape as a weapon in this context is particularly cruel, as it is intended to degrade and control the victim, sending a message that her refusal to convert to Islam would be met with the most severe consequences. This form of coercion through rape makes the religious motivation behind the crime even more evident. The targeting of the victim based on her Hindu faith, coupled with the repeated acts of rape under the false promise of marriage, the persistent pressure to convert her to Islam, and the threats and violence directed at her family, are what unequivocally establish this incident as a hate crime. Disclaimer: It is important to clarify that none of the media sources covering this case have specified the exact date when the victim’s ordeal began.
