Muslim man poses as Hindu, reveals his identity during the relationship, minor converts to Islam to marry him

Case Summary
In a village in Mohanlalganj, Lucknow, a minor Hindu girl converted to Islam after falling in love with a young Muslim who earlier posed as a Hindu. The situation came to light when her brother found her offering namaz and discovered a Quran and Urdu papers in her room. After questioning her friends, he learned that she was in a relationship with a boy who initially introduced himself as Vikas. When the family found out, they imposed restrictions on her. Despite this, the girl left home wearing a burqa, married the young man, and sent a photo of herself to her family. She did not return home after that. Following a police complaint, the girl was found in Kolkata and taken to Nari Niketan. During police questioning, the girl revealed that her friendship with the young man had blossomed into love. Later, he disclosed his real identity and told her that she would need to convert to marry him. This led to her decision to change her religion and marry him.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
There are strong suspicions that this case could be one of a Muslim man grooming a minor Hindu girl. The Muslim man first pretended to be a Hindu. When the girl was already in a relationship with the man, he revealed his identity as a Muslim. Thereafter, he told the minor that she would have to convert to Islam if they were to marry. Thereafter, the girl proceeded to convert to Islam and marry him. The reason why this case is categorised as 'undecided' and has not been added to the hate crime database is because even after being rescued, the girl maintained that she was in love with the Muslim man and had converted to Islam willingly. It is true that minors have no agency to consent to convert under false pretexes, however, the specific age of the victim and the perpetrator is unknown. Further, since the girl has maintained it was consensual with no statement to indicate grooming by the parents, this case is being categorised as undecided. It will be added to the hate crime database if more information emerges.
