Case Summary
A 16-year-old girl named Pooja Pawar committed suicide by jumping into a well in Aher village, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, Maharashtra, after facing eight months of harassment from a man named Kasim Yasin Pathan. Pooja, an 11th-grade science student, had been staying in the city for her studies but returned to her village for Rakshabandhan. Kasim, a local mechanic, had been persistently harassing and threatening her, claiming he would kill her brother if she did not accept his advances. Overwhelmed by his continued harassment, Pooja decided to end her life. Her death sparked outrage in the village, with her relatives and neighbours demanding severe punishment for Kasim. The police booked him under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, 2023.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
It is often observed that Muslim perpetrators target the victims specifically owing to their Hindu religious identity. In several cases, it is also observed that even if the initial targeting may not have been religiously motivated, eventually, when the girl refuses these advances, the following crime either harassment, assault or murder, is driven by religious hate. In this, however, there is no reported indication that the motivation of the harassment was religious in nature, therefore, it is being added as undecided. If more information emerges, it will be added to hate crime database.
