Police busts cow smuggling racket, six arrested for looting cattle-loaded truck
Case Summary
Uttar Pradesh Police in Chandauli busted a cow smuggling racket, arresting six people, including Ajit Kumar, who was involved in looting a cattle-loaded truck en route to a gaushala (cow shelter) on August 14. Ajit Kumar and five accomplices were apprehended after police launched an investigation. Kumar was caught trying to flee to Bihar. The police seized two trucks filled with cattle, 7 mobile phones, and Rs. 3160 from the accused. The criminals had tied the cattle tightly in the trucks to prevent movement, and the police acted swiftly to recover the animals and make the arrests. Chandauli Superintendent of Police, Aditya Langeh, confirmed that more arrests are likely, as other suspects, including Ram Jaggi and Ayush Yadav, have been identified. The arrested individuals have prior criminal records, including involvement in theft cases.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The cow is considered sacred in the Hindu religion. Often, cows are slaughtered by non-Hindu perpetrators as a mark of insult to the Hindu faith. There have been several documented cases throughout history where cow slaughter is used as a method to insult the Hindu faith, convert Hindus (by force-feeding beef) and desecrate temples. In all cases of cow slaughter, there is a suspicion of religious animosity against Hindus working as a motivating factor, however, in the absence of any concrete indication, this case is being categorized as 'undecided'. If more details emerge, it would be added to the hate crime database.
